First Post
I'm planning on giving out a few unique items in a game I'm running. Please take a look and let me know if the wording can be tightened up and if anything might be inherently overpowered for a mid-level game. I don't have any crafting characters playing so I haven't given thought to prereqs and caster levels though I'm open to suggestions. The prices are very rough estimates based on similar items (and since they're a quest reward, I'm not particularly concerned about getting the price right--it's more a way to guage their relative power and to enable me to compare the PCs' equipment to D&D standard).

So, without further ado, the items:

The Scabbard of the champion

This heavy leather-covered wooden scabbard hangs from an ornate red-dyed leather baldric carved with knotwork patterns and leafed in gold. It magically resizes to fit any sword.

Three times per day, when its wearer draws a sword from the sheathe and attacks with it in the same round, it adds extra damage dice to the first blow based on the way the weapon is wielded. One handed: 2d6 damage. Two-handed: 3d6 damage.

My estimated price: 3,000gp

The cloak of the Griffon

The collar of this heavy woolen cloak is surrounded by a short mantle of golden griffon feathers that fall to the height of the shoulders. An ornate brooch with a rampant griffon holds it in place at the neck.

The cloak grants a +2 resistance bonus to all saving throws and grants its wearer the effects of a feather fall spell.

Estimated Price: 10,000gp

The Protector

This darkwood buckler is covered in black leather held in place by numerous burnished brass studs. On the inside, are carved runes of protection and healing.

This +1 buckler grants an additional 5 points of AC against any attempt to confirm a critical hit.

Estimated Price: 4,200gp

Bridgitte
Armbands of the dragonslayer.

Carved of bright steel and fortified with bands of adamant, these vambraces cover the entire forearm and are covered with long furrows and scratches.

The armbands of the dragonslayer have two effects: First, their wearer finds that she is able to use a weapon of any size within a grapple. Second, for one round per day per three character levels or part thereof (2 rounds at level 6, three rounds at level 7, four rounds at level 8, etc), they may be activated as an immediate action to grant their wearer the benefits of a freedom of movement spell.

Estimated Price: 8,000gp

Helm of glory

At first, this helm seems to be a simple, mottled steel open-face helm. Upon closer examination, however, the steel is carved with prayers to Oronthon in the tongues of angels.

This helm grants a +2 enhancement bonus to charisma and grants use of the Sacred Vengeance feat when worn—spend a turn attempt as a free action to add 2d6 damage to any blow you strike against undead until the beginning of your next turn.

Estimated Price: 12,000gp

Could you please point to how you priced these items, in particular what items they compare equally too. Other than that they all seem flavourful.

Sure:

The Scabbard of the champion

My estimated price: 3,000gp (Base Item: Belt of One Mighty Blow--slotless so should be double cost, but only works when you draw the weapon (ad hoc 50% discount) and 3/day instead of 1/day. It could probably go up to a full 3 times the Belt of One Mighty Blow but I prefer round numbers).

The cloak of the Griffon

Estimated Price: 10,000gp (I think I did that wrong--4000 for resistance +2 and 3300 for the additional ring of feather falling effect (at 1.5x cost) should make it about 7300gp)

The Protector

Estimated Price: 4,200gp (based on a +1 light fortification buckler though I guess +5 AC vs. crits is not usually as good as 25% crit immunity since it does nothing for sneak attacks, etc)

Armbands of the dragonslayer.

Estimated Price: 8,000gp (Totally ad-hoc. 5/day is usually the same cost as always active for effect items, so I assumed the ring of freedom of movement (40,000) was 5 times the price of a 1/day item. This isn't really 1/day though--it could be more or less depending upon whether it is shrugging off a grapple or negating a hold person--and adds the benefit of being able to use a weapon of any size in a grapple).

Helm of glory

Estimated Price: 12,000gp (6,000 for a head slot charisma item and an additional 6,000 for the feat--figuring that Sacred Vengeance is a rather weak feat and isn't worth as much as feats like Great Cleave (partially simulated by a +1 weapon ability) or alertness (granted by an ioun stone--which is admittedly slotless)).

My thoughts on these items are: The cloak could perhaps afford some cold & wet-weather climate protection to bolster up to 10k, totally minor point relating to flying through & above the clouds; The Protector strikes me as being a little overpriced, I think it is probably worth 1/2 the difference between +1 & +2. Ymmv.

As an aside, I know that my friends too like it when I make the magic items more flavourful like many of the nick-nacks that littered the previous editions. Often I improve or weaken an item with little 1/2 abilities, the attention to detail is worth it.

First off, these are lovely items. Really flavourful which is always important.

What is the Belt of One Mighty Blow based on? I wouldn't have given as large a restriction as -50%, but then again sheathing then re-drawing the sword is pointless later on (when it becomes necessary) Maybe I would raise it to 5,000gp

Estimated Price: 10,000gp
2^2*1000 [4000] for the saves, 1*1*2000*4 (as the duration is measured in rounds) [8,000]. For a total of 12,000 but the featherfalling is useless untill you fall off something. SO I would give a 20% discount on that part, for 6,400+4,000, and I would round to 10,000GP.

The pricing seems about right. :)

This is the one I have problems with.... I don't like the idea of being able to use any size of in a grapple. But that aside I would set the Freedom of action to a specific number of rounds . Otherwise Its hard to price s it scales with the user. As well as that I doesfollow the link between 'Once per day per three levels' Surely that would be 0 at 1-3, 1 at 3-6, 2 at 6-9, 3 at 9-12 etc.....

This is awesome, no need for change. :)

Is there any way to add the standard underbar? The one with What kind of magic the item detects as, what is needed to create it and the cast level?

This seems too cheap to me. I think I'd agree with the suggestion to up it to 5,000gp, maybe a bit more.

You could probably add some other small benefit to this for that price.

This item seems a bit too pricy for what it does. You could probably consider your boost to be equivalent to a +1 bonus, maybe even a little less.

These seem just a bit too cheap for what they do. I would go with a set number of rounds for the Freedom of Movement, and change the wording about using any size weapon within a grapple so that a halfling wearing these bracers can't use a Storm Giant's greatsword in a grapple.

Ferrets right on this one, everyone is forgeting the time based modifiers for a continous spell

Forgetting implies that I 'know' that rule, ;) I eyeball new items and let the minutiae fall aside as levels & new treasures accumulate.
