In 2E, I really enjoyed how psionics had kind of a rock/paper/scissors relationship with martial and magical beings. A lot of psionic creatures would straight up eat spells, but generally still crumpled against steel.

The PF2e's Kineticist has a primary ability of a big (energy) blast that they can do once a turn, and then a bunch of abilities that either modify the blast, or are thematically tied to the blast. There's also a few class features that are very obviously modelled on the 3.5 Warlock. Like the one that changes the blast into a melee weapon of the kineticist's chosing, while keeping the damage.

If you want to play a blaster in PPF2e, play a kineticist.

Spells use V,S,M, but psionics have no components. One thematic that they had was that auditory, visual and scent accompanied their use in 3e. A psionicist disintegrating something might have a black aura surround their head and the smell of ozone permeate the area.
In Pathfinder 1st edition, psionics was rebranded as another form of magic called Psychic Magic. This form of magic had two spell components that were unique to it, Thought and Emotion.

Wizards study ancient tomes to unlock arcane secrets of the universe, and clerics pray to distant deities to grant them divine power. Yet there is a third, more esoteric kind of magic, connected to every creature’s composite being, from the conscious mind to the deepest desire, from the life force to the spirit, from the very soul to the cosmic self. This third type of magic is psychic magic.

A psychic spell largely functions like any other spell. It’s another type of magic, similar to arcane or divine magic—in fact, those who use psychic magic are easily mistaken for practitioners of arcane and divine traditions. Metamagic feats and any other rules that alter or trigger from spells can usually be used with psychic spells (though see the Components section below for a few exceptions). Psychic spellcasters aren’t affected by effects that target only arcane or divine spellcasters, nor can they use arcane or divine scrolls or other items or feats that state they can be utilized by only arcane or divine spellcasters.

First reaction: yuck.

Second reaction: okay, nevermind, that's cool.

Still, I like psychic "magic" to not be subject to counterspell, antimagic fields, etc. Though I understand that would be a pain to balance without building the system from scratch.

elaborate?
It just is. It retains the 3.5 warlock’s core mechanic - energy blasts that can be modified in lots of different ways, It just changes the fluff from an external patron to internal psychic power. The damage scale, hit dice, BAB progression and many of the abilities are exactly the same.

Kineticist is basically a reskin of the 3.5 warlock.

Except, as befits its origins... it stuffs the "simple caster" class full of fiddly, irritating mechanics like Burn.
