I prefer a 1 to 1 point buy. 79 points. Give the players all 12s, allow them to adjust +1/-1 as they wish. (72 points to distribute as they wish) Works out OK - low to moderate power campaign. All 13s - moderate to high power (78 points). All 14s - Super heros, CRs no longer accurate (84 pts).
I strongly dislike the 'standard' point buy. The system is linear (with the exception of bonus spells)- an 18 is just as better than a 16 as a 12 is to a 10. Why does it cost 2 points to improve a 10 to a 12, and 6 for a 16 to 18? It just does not make me happy.
And, it adds an additional cost to race selection. The +2/-2 races can Gain 4 points over humans and other races without stat modifiers - the difference between a 10 and a 14 for a secondary stat. And of course, the poor half-orc is just, well, even sadder and poorer than normal.
