D&D 5E Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

It wouldn't solve the main issue I have with it, which is lack of realism. People can't select the stats they have. Instead, they're born with whatever stats they have and make do. Plus, it isn't all about high stats for a lot of people who roll.

I've always assumed that the people with low or substandard stats stay at home on the farm. After all, adventurers are the equivalent of a team of professional athletes, not the couch potatoes who watch them.

Normal people become heroes all the time. That said, that's why 1e warned that you should have at least two 15s, and 3e made it a rule that you couldn't have a negative total stats bonus or no stat over 13 without re-rolling. You didn't need to have awesome stats, but you should at least be decent. In any case, people don't choose their exact stats, so no amount of array or point buy will be sufficient for me.

Exactly who do you think is forcing you to use point buy or array?
 







I like rolling more for the element of chaos than any pretense of "realism". Clattering dice on the table and then figuring out how it makes my concept easier or harder is fun.

That said, I always allow players to use the standard Array if they think their rolls look unfun.
