I noticed this as I read the original post:

"...if you used point buy, how much would you use?"

And an "other" option was included in the poll. So much for If/Then clauses. Heh. "If I used point buy, I wouldn't use point buy." ;)

Nothing malicious, just thought it was noteworthy.

I said 28-31. Somewhere twixt above the elite array and below high power.

It really depends on the campaign that I'm going to be running.

For instance, in the last campaign that I ran, I wanted it to be clear that the characters were larger than life heroes, far beyond mere mortals... So I gave them a staggering 48 points with which to buy their attributes.

In the next campaign that I am planning, I want to emphasize the gritty harshness of the post-apocalyptic world, so I am going to be using a 28 point buy. (I would do 25 points for this, but I am afraid that my player's would have heart attacks, going from one extreme to the other).

I ALWAYS use dice. But if I ever did use point buy, I would use 25. Point buy already allows you to min/max your character enough. You don't need more than 25 points to build an effective character and I don't care how tough the campaign is. And if the campaign isn't tough, then ability scores should not concern you unless they don't fit your roleplaying concept, which in a point buy they ought to.

Were it not that point buy makes higher stats increasingly more expensive to purchase, I might agree with you. Instead, point buy generally produces more balanced characters than a 4d6 drop lowest method. True, you can tailor your character better, but that is something altogether different from min/maxing.

25 points gets you:
15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

Before any racial mods. A whopping +5 cumulative modifier. In my experience, 4d6 drop lowest will render an average +7 cum modifier. It might not seem like much, but when that +2 mod is applied to your balliwick, you become that much better at what you profess to specialize in. It does make a difference. Especially at low levels when the playing field between the classes is its most even.
