So, I have mixed feelings about this addition to the "implied setting". First and foremost, I have to wonder how they intend to "imply" it.

The "points of light" method seems to entail a move away from powerful magic being institutionalized by humanity (and their allies), because when that happens, you get kingdoms that have sufficient might to expand their zone of control beyond small pockets of civilization surrounded by teeming forests of monsters.

We've heard that reliance on magic items is decreased. I suppose that means the notion of the all-purpose magic shop that supplies the needs of adventurers will see a diminished presence, which will in turn diminish the value of wealth (since wealth is almost entirely spent on gear).

And what does this mean for established settings? Forgotten Realms has its frontiers like the Silver Marches, but for the most part it is NOT a "points of light" world. There are more powerful franchises in Fearun than you can shake a rod of lordly might at. Can't speak for Eberron, but I'm sure someone elese here can.
