What drives a person to do something like this?

Why, the tireless innovators of Q Branch, of course!

Not to be a cynic, but it could have been worse. Moreover, what level of handywork/intelligence does it take to engineer an exploding pen? Its not a nice thing to do, but part of me is a little impressed. Seriously, I dont condone it...but come on it was "minor burns and scratches" that is harldy a big deal. It may be a precursor to a bigger problem, but it should not ruin a kids life.

It was a big deal. It doesn't need to "...ruin [his] life.." but it does need to be a serious wrench tossed in it. He was expelled from the school for a reason, not mentioned in any news article I saw, and he decided that was the way to get back at anyone wandering by. Total disregard for anyone other than himself/. Have you ever pulled the top off a pen with your teeth? Could have made the result a lot worse. He needs to be tried and punished so that someone else doesn't think it a cool idea to try. He needs to be punished so he gets the idea he is responsible for the actions he takes - expulsion didn't do that, maybe this will.

I hadnt realized that the kid in question was doing this as a reaction to previous punishment. I had assumed it was a first offense. Nail him to a wall...he had a second chance.
