Poll about gamers and drugs

No drugs for me or my gaming group, but then we're hardly a typical group (we're all real life clergy). Not too many evil PCs either;)

I like my brain too much to do anything to seriously harm it.

I've got an idea for you to try out.

Write/print up a flyer detailing all of your needs as a gamer (what you want, what you don't want, etc.) and put it up at your local RPG/hobby store.

I've, within the last two years moved to Portland, OR and that's what I did. By doing this you'll meet the right group of people eventually and in the meantime, you can meet some cool people in the process. Some of them won't all fit your style as a gamer. That's when you get everybody's number and try to organize your own group. It takes a little time but believe me, it's worth gaming without a bunch of loadies (that's my term for abusers of substance). Trust me. I speak from experience! Good luck.

have you tried posting in the gamers seeking gamers board? if you lay out what you are looking for in a group, perhaps it will find you. or perhaps there will be something allready posted there that meets your needs.

Good for you! Staying drug free in the face of peer pressure is always admirable.

I, myself, have never taken an illegal substance. I drink rarely, and smoke half a pack a day, but am still trying to cutback/quit.

As for my group, I have 8 players, of which I can say 5 have never used illegal drugs and 2 of the other three have tried some but don't use habitually. The last 1 is a member of the gaming group that moved away and just came back. He used to do some regular pot smoking, but seems to have toned it down, or quit. I am not sure yet.

I don't allow drug use during the games I run, and discourage anything but moderate drinking. (Though I did get tipsy during a couple of gaming sessions way back when - handed out WAY too many magic items as a result....so the group would like me to drunk again :)

Never really had too many problems with drugs in my games, so I wish you some luck in the future.

As far as I am concerned, drugs and gaming don't mix (and I count alchohol as a drug).

My current game group plays totally straight (even though our host has a full bar and number of fine micro-brews in the fridge). I have played with groups that are pretty drug friendly, but it always seemed that halfway into the session, the combined effects of wine, beer, pot and whatever else just made the game devolve into sillyness.

So no, you are not alone. Keep fighting the good fight!

Well, my high school group was clean, as was my college group. I think the closest we came was knowing some people who did drugs. ;)

My wife's experiences on the other hand were pretty much the other way around - the people she gamed with in college all smoked pot and did various forms of hallucinogens.

Current groups are (to the best of my knowledge) drug-free - and certainly so at sessions. Although we did drink once after Exalted, but that was New Year's Eve and we were reading Eye of Argon. (Don't ask.)

It looks from the response like there's plenty of us drug-free gamers out here - it's just a fluke that you ran into two groups of the other guys in your area

In college, I had a shortlived campaign in which everyone involved got stoned. The game went nowhere fast. I blame the pot.

Nowadays, we often have some drug at the table, sometimes more than one -- caffeine and/or alcohol. Nobody overindulges -- I think the worst I've seen is somebody going for a second cup of coffee.

I used to have players who would smoke out on the porch, but no more.

As long as it's done in moderation, light mood-alterers like beer or coffee have never been a problem for us.

Well, considering both me and my DM have never drank alcohol, we run a pretty drug free game. Kinda funny considering my DM is a real life bard, but hey :). I think the only time anyone ever drank alcohol was when my DM got some (appearantly) good beer as a tip, and needed to get rid of it. On the other hand, we go through at least 3 12 packs of soda a night :)

Of course, my roomate says that most ravers are too cool to play D&D :b

To answer the original question I know quite a few gamers that do drugs and I know quite a few people who don't. Just like the people I work with. Some do drugs and some don't.

What bothers me is that you have people pushing this on you. For the record I've been known to indulge in the vices. I like to party and have a good time. But with the people I hang out with it's cool if you do and it's cool if you don't...no arm twisting. Seems odd to have adults putting peer pressure on you.

Ignoring the stern warning.

I helped put my best friend in 12th grade away for posession. If my kids did drugs, ever, and I caught them, they would go to boot camp damn fast. I found out that one person in my group used Marijuana. He was thrown (Literally, I'm a fairly big guy) out of my house and warned not to come near myself, my house, or my kids again. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough on him for me to call the police.

I was the leader of the group that got alcohol removed from my college campus resturaunt and got smoking banned anywhere on campus grounds. I was also involved in the group that made it illegal to smoke anywhere at all in public resturaunts, buildings, malls, etc in my city. I won't remain friends with anyone who smokes or does drugs. If I can, I'll get them put away where they can get some help.

So no, none of us drink or do drugs. If any of us do and I haven''t found out yet, it won't be pleasant.
