Poll about gamers and drugs

I'm sure there are gamers who don't drink or do drugs. I wouldn't know anything about them, but I'm sure they exist somewhere.

Um, just so you know, this thread will probably not get you a "balanced" sample. Posting in a public forum that you use illegal drugs, or that you know someone who does, is not the brightest tactic. No that anyone reading the boards is a narc, but still, the posts are a touch too traceable for people to be comfortable.

That being said, I'm in the "don't drink, don't do drugs, don't smoke" category. My fellow gamers are similar (one or two may have a beer on occasion). I don't particularly care what people do on their own time, but I won't have such stuff in my house, or at my gaming table.

None of my group touches drugs, but some alchohol flows every once in a while(responsibly though). In all my 20 years of gaming, I only played in one group where I know one person smoked pot. Never during games though. Nobody ever tried to force any on me and I wouldn't have taken any if they had tried anyway.

Keep looking and I wish you luck in finding some gamers more in tune with your desires!

Well..

Personally, I've never done any illegal drugs, never even puffed a cigarrette. I did drink 1/4th of a beer once, and that was two years ago (I'm 30 mind you). So I'm pretty damn clean. Everyone in my group is clean, except for one person in my group who is a stoner. He's never brought drugs to the game or come in obviously under the influence, I would tolerate neither of those things.

Re: Ignoring the stern warning.

First of all, thank you everyone for remaining civil - I hope it stays that way. . :D

I was the leader of the group that got alcohol removed from my college campus resturaunt and got smoking banned anywhere on campus grounds. I was also involved in the group that made it illegal to smoke anywhere at all in public resturaunts, buildings, malls, etc in my city. I won't remain friends with anyone who smokes or does drugs. If I can, I'll get them put away where they can get some help.

So no, none of us drink or do drugs. If any of us do and I haven''t found out yet, it won't be pleasant.

I think this is kind of funny in light of the fact that the character Hagrid in the Harry Potter books got drunk on more than one occasion ;)

Hi Green Knight,

Just yesterday I responded to your post in the Gamers Seeking Gamers forum, and now here you are looking for a drug-free gaming group.... coincidence? I think not. :)

My groups are illegal drug-free, non-smoking, one guy sometimes has a few beers, and I think everyone sucks down some caffeine most nights.

Check out my post in the GSG forum; maybe we can get you gaming with some sober people. ;)

Cheers,

Way back in the day, a guy smoked some pot in his car then came into my apartment to DM. He thought he would be great but it was more entertaining to him than to us. I climbed up on the chair he was in and perched by his shoulder playing a quasit familiar. All 190 pounds of me leaning over him, playing with his hair and whispering, "Kill them. Kill them all, Master!" was a bit much for him to take. Once he got laughing so much he was unable to continue another guy acted as DM and ran a cool adventure. I also never had anyone show up obviously 'mood-altered' after that either. :)

In our current game we often have a beer or two while gaming but we also eat dinner before we start gaming. My gaming groups have been social groups that get together for reasons other than gaming, althought the games are what got us introduced.

Other than caffeine, I've been drug-free for my whole life. At times, I regret not having cool "Waking up face down in my own vomit next to a total stranger who was carrying 72 communicalbe diseases" stories to swap with my friends, but, overall, I think I'm better off. Fact is, I have a few ideas of what I'd be like "under the influence", and both I and anyone who might be near me is probably a lot better off if I retain what limited self-control I have.

On a similar note, I once had a fellow respond to a Gamers seeking Gamers ad by writing (paraphrased),
"I saw your ad in GSG. I don't smoke or drink or do drugs, and I don't put up with people who do, or who swear. Do you do these things?"

Well, as I said, sometimes a player will drink a single beer during an evening of gaming, and sometimes I have players who go out on the stoop to smoke, and if I'm playing a loud crude guard, then she'll use loud crude language. I wrote the guy back and told him this.

Turns out he'd been burnt by a group of foolish drunken stoners who replaced roleplaying with swearing, and he was looking for a different group; the way we played, he said, didn't sound like it'd be a problem.

Err...right. Glad to know we weren't a problem. I was so turned off by his initial approach to me that I never wrote him back.

It is, of course, perfectly reasonable to look for a group with the same vice tolerance as your own. But I'd suggest being polite and nonselfrighteous when you go looking -- otherwise, you may get turned down by a group on account of your attitude, even if you have no problem with them.

In my 15 years as a gamer, I can only think of a single occasion where alcohol was combined with gaming. This was after one of my friends had finished his thesis, and then gamed directly afterwards. He brought a bottle of Dom Perignon '85, which we shared (and a fair share of it went into the character sheets).

The only regular drug is caffeine, and that in moderate quantities. Illegal drugs have never, ever been taken when gaming in any of my groups (as far as I know).

Outside gaming almost everybody drinks alcohol, but it's been years since I knew anybody taking any illegal drugs.
