Did the players make any efforts to turn the foes against one another? One of the best things about using numerous and mixed amounts of lesser foes is it encourages players to try and mitigate their foe's numeric advantage rather than just kill everything.

Not in this particular case– the foes were all undead being motivated by a larger force, so, there wasn't a lot of negotiating to be had.

Keep in mind, this group loves doing that sort of thing when they can: their best moment in the campaign so far was posing as one BBEG's minions while running a scam on another BBEG, which then set the two BBEG's on each other. Fun times. But when you've got hordes of ghouls chanting hymns to Orcus climbing up out of the catacombs, skullduggery isn't very effective.

What's the difference between a swarm of Auraks

Ah yes, the Krynn games--more flavor than that Forgotten Realms ones, but so difficult to get your hands on. If only I hadn't traded mine away for some Bard's Tale's games I quickly got bored with.
