My last character was a fighter/rogue; I wouldn't consider 6 levels of fighter "dipping" (although he has now taken more levels of rogue).

My next character, I'm probably going to be straight fighter because my last one ended up being more of a range guy and I miss getting into the middle of the scrum. Besides I want to try a champion fighter/shield master option, I think it could be more effective than people give them credit for.

I don't even think multiclassing in general is that popular. Half the groups I know don't even allow it.

But yeah, I also never had a multiclass fighter.

My group hasn't even had a single level of fighter in our campaigns yet. One of our players may play a fighter in a far off campaign, but they also enjoy multiclass-dipping, so I can't say for certain.

4 of of my 5 characters have been 4+ lvs of a single class.

1st PC: 5th lv Fighter (warforged, variant noble, eldritch knight) - dead
2nd PC: 6th lv Druid (1/2ling, acolyte, circle of the land)
3rd (and current) PC: 6th lv Ranger (1/2elf, noble, beast master)
4th (and favorite) PC: 8th lv Warlock (1/2ling, far wanderer, fey patron, chain pact)
5th PC: 2nd lv Fighter (human, criminal, has the magic initiate feat, will probably become an eldritch knight)

*I briefly considered MCing the warlock - into wizard - for story reasons. Fortunately the situation that prompted that consideration got resolved to my liking & I didn't have to do that.

*I'm strongly considering MCing the human fighter into warlock eventually. Maybe sorcerer? Not for any real power advantage, but because story-wise thanks to his past criminal activity he's got a bit of a fire spirit (fire elemental?) fused into him. This is already the source of his Magic Initiate feat (manifesting as fire based effects). I'm thinking that the longer he's carrying this spirit around in him, the more it'll influence him. I'll have to see how things play out.

An "other" option would have been nice for homebrew. Only two of my last five characters have been PHB classes, so I picked sorcerer, which was my most recent PHB class.

Also, out of the last 25 characters we've had in our games that have progressed >= level 4, we've had 2 single class fighters, and 0 fighter dips. The only dips have been 2 cases of Cleric 1 and 2 cases of Rogue X, with both Rogue dips onto Rangers. That Ranger/Rogue synergy was too tempting to pass up after Ranger 6 for both players.

I'm running 4 characters currently (in 4 different campaigns). None are fighters (the closest I've gotten to playing a fighter was running the Knight NPC i got from the Deck of Many Things in a previous campaign) but I'm sure I'll eventually get around to playing one.

In my group, I've found that barbarian seems to be preferred over fighter.

That said, one of the highest level characters I've seen in 5e was a fighter (the campaign ended at 19th level), so that probably ought to count for something. He was a single classed Battlemaster who was a whip specialist (I added a feat that gave the whip a few advantages like the OA granted by Polearm Master).

Technically, though, the last 5e character I played, a heavily modded pregen who was, I'd guess, about 7th level, didn't have a class, at all. Closest fit?

The prior 5e character I played over 4th level was single-classed. It's neither the current nor the last character over 4th level, but there's a clear answer. Would you prefer that one?

Champion Fighter with Duelist style, coupled with Defense or Protectikn style when he gets a second, and the Shield Master feat....it’s a very solid build.

Don’t listen to the DPR slaves that will tell you otherwise!
