PS for Zappo!
Do you own both the Italian and English versions of the corebooks? I have been playing in English only, but I always wanted to know how the names of monsters, spells, equipment ecc. have been translated in Italian. I would like to make an Excel file with all the translations.
I own the italian PHB. I can understand English almost as easily as Italian, but that's not the case with the vast majority of Italian people, including those I game with. If my players are going to flip through the MM to find out the monster's weaknesses, they will bloody well have to sweat through English doing it.
At least they'll learn something actually useful. Plus, browsing through a tome of ancient lore that is
actually written in a language that the
player can barely understand is the top of roleplaying, don't you think?
However, I used to have most core 2E books in Italian, and the translations of items, spells and monsters are the same; I know those of most magical items. They are very good translations, except for the occasional fluke. For example, rogue is
ladro, which has the connotation of thief. The "conjuration" school becomes "evocazione", which is too similar to "evocation", leading to confusion for people like me who use both English and Italian manuals. And then there's the old orc problem, dating back to the first translation of LotR. But that's about it, I can't remember any other relevant mistake (and, to be fair, I can't figure a better solution to any of these).
