WP/VP don't work for the games I like playing. Too many criticals.
I fixed that. But then, I fixed most of what people complain about when you port it into D&D. That's what porting rules is all about.

I don't have anything personally against WP/VP, but I don't really think they are as fitting for the D&D genre as HP. For other types of games, I might use them. I wouldn't be against playing in a game that used them. But for my own games, I'd likely stick to HP. SImple, clean, and effective.

Yes, some folks have an occasional conceptual problem with HP. But you kknow what? Most such conceptual problems cease to be an issue when you've got a really good story :)

Good poll! And excellent point!

I have to throw my lot in with the hit points! The vitality/mortal point system is a great idea and I really liked it in the Alternity game. But maybe because of nostalgia and the fantasy aspect of D&D, the hit point idea

I don't find VP/WP more 'realistic' than hp. In fact, I find them somewhat less realistic... you can charge though a rain of bullets and not be scratched, and then suddenly *bam* *bam* most anything thrown/shot at you causes gaping wounds.

That is, imagine a 10 round fight with bats/pipes/something. Assuming no crits are dealt in the first 8 rounds (pretty likely, around 80% chance) and the right amount of VP, the fighters swing at each other for ~48 seconds without getting any serious wounds, then suddenly lose half of their hit points in each of the next 6 seconds. Wha...?

No, thanks, I'll stick with the abstraction of hit points.

You're joking, right? You've never heard of vitality points and wound points? You've never seen Star Wars d20 or Polyhedron Magazine?

And isn't it spelled "Chaozu?" At least, that's how it's spelled in all the Dragonball mangas I have here next to my computer...

Maybe it's time for some update. D20 did just that, now many other parts of D&D stick to outdated stereotypes.

But it's true that a good story is all you need in a good RPG ! :) Maybe I shouldn't visit these boards anymore and just get playing.

I think that simply on the basis for smooth running etc, hp work for D&D. They suit the rest of the system fine. Another game? - I'm not so sure. D&D? - I think they're good.

You know Jack, it is possible that there are gamers that don't play Star Wars or read Polyhedron. Like me for instance.

I am familiar with VP/WP, and here's how I understand it. Essentially it divides HP between Vitality Points and Wound Points.

VP works pretty much like hit points. Get hit, take damage. Only exception is for crits or other 'special' damage. These go on WP, as does all damage once your VP are gone.

WP represent only your ability to take physical damage. They do not scale with level, and you likely have very few. Crits go directly here, making them very dangerous.

Grim-n-Gritty does this better.
