D&D 4E Poll: Who Would LIke to See the Drow in 4E PHB?

Should the drow be added to the 4E PHB?

I answered "don't care", but it's more that I'm ambivalent. As they're currently written, I don't think they'd make a good PHB race. But if the races are being reworked significantly (e.g. Eladrin are scaled down to PC race status), I could see the drow working quite well. They'd no longer have to live exclusively in massive cities in the underdark (not very conducive to ending up in an adventuring party on the surface), and they could be less consistently evil, so that adventuring outcasts aren't such an aberration. In the FR setting, they could still stick to the underdark, of course.

I do like the balance that would give to the elven races. Eladrin are aloof and mystical, elves are wary and skilled, and drow are cruel and militant.

Even if drow could make a decent PC race, I'm not sure they should make it into the PHB1. If they do, I imagine it will be at least partially as fan service.

Dancing lights are good for setting up ambushes. Something a typical drow does a lot of.

But not too useful as a PC ability, and should probably be stricken in favor of something with more utility.

And how useful is dancing lights for setting up ambushes really? I've never seen a player fooled by them.

I for one prefer my Drow as treacherous, twisted perverts who are just a rumor to most surface dwellers. In short, set back the clock so the Drow are Monsters again! The Drow should be truly repugnant things, not misunderstood anti-heroes. Their society should be something out of De Sade's worst nightmare. In fact, you shouldn't be able to publish a Drow sourcebook suitable for children, or adults with weak stomaches.

Some things are just irredeemably evil, and the Drow race should be one of those things. If nothing scares the PCs, realizing just what the Drow want to do to their bodies should.

I think the core rules should allow you to play the iconic/most popular characters featured in the setting's fiction (or, for high level characters, eventually) -- so I voted yes.

Maybe so, but they deserve a place in the core more than Warforged do. Still, I'd rather leave them for the PHB2
"They deserve"?

I want stuff in my game that will make my game better. This is why I do not want 42 random subraces of Elf -- they haven't brought enough to the table to justify the space they require to describe.

Drow might be good, depending on how WotC re-designs them.

But I want the PHB races carefully selected to minimize overlap and provide the biggest gamut of character concepts for my players -- not selected based on monster book attendance record or longevity or even popularity.

Gods, no. One elf race is enough. It already looks like we might be getting two, with the new eladrin. Three would be ridiculous.

Besides, why do drow need to be so different from regular elves? Maybe just have an option in the elf rules to get darkvision instead of low-light vision but take a slight penalty when in bright light. And have black skin and white hair.

I voted no. I'm open to changing my mind if drow flavor drastically changes, but not only will that not happen, they'd be less popular if that happened. I think they should go into the MM and be counted as playable only in certain settings (not FR!).

Did it say anywhere that Eladrin are playable?
