[Poly] What's happening to Polyhedron/Dungeon?

I have nothing to do with this magazine, but...

You know at some point, a customer can become such a thorn in the side that you don't want their money anymore. I've worked in jobs where a customer who bought a $200 product used up so much support time that we finally said "I'm sorry we can't keep you happy, and here's your money back. Good bye." Okay, it was more politely than that, but you get the idea.

If you're one of these people who will regularly write up intense, vitriolic diatribes about a _magazine_, then you're most likely one of those customers.

Seriously, get your money back. I doubt they want it. You're a pain (this being the general "you" rather than any particular poster whose name starts with R) and your business is not wanted.

ST (not speaking for anybody but myself)

That issue is "current"? It's not even out to subscribers yet, to the best of my knowledge. I'm not expecting my copy for two or three weeks yet...

I'd be interested in your feeling on that matter after you read the article. One of my goals was to make it as accessible as possible to players and DMs alike. It includes a host of plot hooks DMs can use to bring the Falcon into a campaign, and plenty of additional tips for ways to keep it from destroying the official Star Wars continuity when the players do get thair hands on the controls.

The article also covers the "stock" YT-1300 transport, providing maps of two different configurations plus the Falcon itself.

I think (or hope, at least) that you'll be pleasantly surprised... :)

Oh I didn't mean to take shots at the quality of the article or anything like that. I would like to have more than just ship writeups. But that does sound like more than the last ship article I saw. I'll check it out.

The tough part about being in charge of a magazine is that making decisions I feel are best for the largest number of readers sometimes means making a change that some readers hate.

Erik, you need to take my sig quote, print it out in big letters, laminate it, and tack it to the wall. With any luck, Vinegar Joe's wisdom will give you strength.

And, once again, I'll mention that I love the minigames, and I wish at least some of 'em would be made OGC.

Ranger REG and i finally agree on something.
You can gloat all you like, Diaglo. You win. I lost, and not just this battle but my heart and spirit for this hobby.

Then it would be easier not to complicate it any further, and that is the businessman in me. Pick one core audience and stick with it. As for me, I'm a tired, frustrated, and demoralized soldier in this losing battle. There is no other way for me to protest against the many Dungeon readers who wants nothing less than a 100% Dungeon magazine, and for the Poly content to occupy less than a quarter-page (about the same space reserved for advertisement).

I mean, what more do you want from me, Mr. West? :(

All I'll say is, I buy Dungeon for Polyhedron. I don't use the modules at all. I don't think that makes them wasted paper...if nothing else, reading them can give me ideas.

For that matter, even if you don't ever intend to run a Poly mini-game, you could always harvest feats and ideas and so-on.

I'd have been happiest with a 50/50 split. I was even okay with the idea of fluctuating the size of the magazine. But I'll take what I can get. I'm grateful you're doing what you can to keep the magazine going, Erik.

Now, some M&M content for Polyhedron would rock. Perhaps a minigame?

I think this point has been made enough times now: neither audience was enough to maintain either magazine. Picking one core audience will kill both magazines. It seems to me that Paizo is fighting to keep two ailing magazine alive. You think they don't want to publish TWO SUCCESSFUL magazines? Of course they do! Right now they don't believe either magazine is capable of surviving on its own, so they're trying some admittedly wacky strategies to keep readers from both happy long enough while they figure out a plan that will get both magazines back on their feet.

What do you THINK they're trying to do? Why would they want to kill a potentially successful magazine? They are actually in the business of publishing magazines. For profit. More successful magazines is good for Paizo. I think it's safe to assume that most of the people working there have figured this out.

If you think there's a better way, get on it. Round up the subscribers and make a bid to Paizo for the Polyhedron rights. Or start your own magazine to fill the gaping void you think Paizo is neglecting. If there's money to be made, why not go get it yourself?

That's not to say you shouldn't speak up when you see Paizo making mistakes. But I don't see you identifying any policy mistakes in this post -- you're just ranting melodramatically as though this were a battle you've been waging at great personal sacrifice. Which, you know, is fair enough. Everybody has to rant from time to time.

But seriously, if you think this company is screwing up and missing out and driving people away, why not start up a venture to grab hold of that potential money? Online magazines are a lot of work, sure, but Asgard makes a go of it. And there's others. Sell some ads, grab some subscribers and you could be on to something.

Dear God has this thread become a $#!+ slinging contest...

As a subscriber for MANY years, I've got to say that I am VERY happy with Dungehedron, and I will renew for three years again (um... they DO still offer that, right?). While I don't use every adventure in the book, or even a large fraction of them, I do get inspiration and ideas from them. I prefer smaller adventures, but hey... since I have a subscription, I can go to the back issues and generally find anything I want. Poly, on the other hand, is a great resource. I love having support for Star Wars now, and I absolutely LOVE (most of) the d20 minigames. I run a cross-genre campaign, and two of the minigames have already been used. It's even better now that I know they'll be supported.

The only thing that could make it BETTER, is having the best of the d20 minigames integrated into one shot books like FFG's Horizon books (Redline, Grimm, etc).

Thanks
Chris
