Possible return of Dark*Matter

One of the best damn setting books ever produced.

And once again, they have a fellow Illini writing it. Excellent.

So little would need to be changed to make it work in d20...some new advanced classes [cryptoengineer, UFOlogist, paranormalist], new races, and hopefully an alternate magic system [to emulate the different flavors of magic available in DM].

If we keep asking (i.e. pestering), perhaps we'll get a full blown setting book too! :)

I hope so! D*M is one of the coolest settings ever published. It would be somewhat of a shame to see 275odd pages of setting material squeezed into 15 or 20 pages in Poly, but I guess it's a start toward converting the rest of the stuff.

My guess is that the Poly version is the best that we can hope for. That they're even doing it at all is more than I expected.

It's too bad that one of the sample settings in d20 Modern couldn't have been dropped in favor of Dark*Matter. I'd have much preferred to see a combined Shadow Chasers/Urban Arcana, GeneTech, and D*M be the default settings. I mean, with D*M you can basically do Agents of Psi *plus* all the cool conspiracy stuff.

I would love to see D*M resurrected into a full book rather than a 64 page mini-game.

To do a mini game they are going to have to focus on just one aspect of the original.

I still have fond memories of playtesting D*M and my players being stuck with an overdue library book that doesn't exist, but everybody wanted.

I can remember Jim Butler bringing a Galley proof over to GenCon UK. Seeing my name in print and the wonderful layout and design and wishing I could take with me, my ring binder hardcopy just did seem the same after that (must see if I have still got my playtest copy).

While I don't think you were trying to be exact, the good news is that at least Poly has a higher page count now.

I'd love to see D*M, but as a matter of curiosity. I've played RPGs for over 20 years and never heard of it before coming to EN World.

It sounds really cool. While we wait, are there any good fan sites I can hit to learn more?

Thanks.

Alternity.net is the main fan site for D*M's parent RPG, Alternity. There are some links listed under the "Community" section.

There is also a portion of the Wizards site still maintained for Alternity that has info and some downloads.

Lastly, you can find Alternity/D*M products in a lot of larger game stores, as well as all over EBay. SVGames also has PDF versions of all the books for sale.

Ah!

So Dark Matter is a setting for Alternity? Now that makes sense!

Looks pretty neat. I look forward to seeing what they may do with it in Polyhedron.

Thanks for your help.
