Post your monster CR complaints here

Mr. Greathouse, how did you calculate the CR for the tendricolous? Does your generator take regeneration into account, and how does it do so?

(Perhaps if I type regeneration 10 in the SQ line; is it valued differently than if I type in DR 5/+1?)

Yes, just type it into the SQ field. Some SQs are given unique values, while unrecognized ones are counted as a 'typical' amount. I can't remember offhand which are recognized.

If you'd like to test the generator, try some monsters from the MM. It's actually quite good at what it does. If you'd prefer to break it, put in unusual numbers for the AC. It's bad at handling AC.

CRGreathouse,

Is your CR generator on-line? If so could you post the address. If not, could you tell me what the generator says the CR for the demons in the MM should be?

Thanks.

I was going to give you a link to CR Greathouse's page, but I found out why I deleted the link.

I saved his generator on my computer, so I don't need to use up internet time to calculate monster CRs.

The Juggernaut from MM2 sure looks bad on paper at least. Huge trample damage, high SR and spell like abilities out the wazoo..

OK it's move is only 10ft, so maybe that balances it somewhat.

I honestly don't see the problem with Girallons. IF they're lucky, and IF you stand still to fight them, you'll get torn a new one. Pretty much just like

Conversely if you keep on the move, they do pretty pathetic damage, have no real special abilities (rend doesn't really count, it's just like another melee attack), and are too dumb to really have any spectacular tactics. The only real problem is if they grapple you.

Frankly, I'd much rather meet a girallon than a tiger (HD 6, CR 4) - a tiger is much more likely to ambush you, and when it does, it gets to charge and then fire of 5 attacks.

Tendriculous - ok, so the regeneration is a bit of a pain unless you know how to overcome it (but it is easy to overcome - bludgeoning damage is everywhere). On the other hand, it can't hide, move fast or attack at range, and it'll be encountered outdoors. Really it's not much of a problem. Certainly not CR 9.

My votes are for:

Darkmantle - it's CR 1, and it has that lethal combo of darkness and blindsight. Level 1 characters don't have a counter to this (unless you allow faerie fire to work), and will be unable to find or hit the thing, or save friends once one of them gets grappled. At level one, even a grapple check of 0 is sufficient to grab a PC 50% of the time. When a PC's grappled, they will then have taken 2d4+4 damage, enough to kill the average non-fighter, and possibly enough to kill a fighter too.

o hyes, except that they do AMBUSH you, and that int 3 is equivalent to real world predator like dragons, which are very, very cunning... remember the Ghost and the Phantom, with Val kilmer, it was real, and they were lions... int 3...

Oh, and as far as I remember, girallons have a tatic of reaping and going away with the victim... with their skills, that is a sure prey... ecept for the rogue, who can see them...

Spoken like someone who never had to fight them. For one thing, they don't have to get lucky - their bonus to hit is easily good enough to hit the ACs of most 5th level characters with a very low roll. Even if they only hit with 3 out of their 4 claw attacks, that's 40-50 damage right there, with the rend. Plus they have a 10' reach.

As for the tactic of hit-and-run, most characters aren't going to know how dangerous they are the first time they meet them, and that first lesson is probably going to cost the life of at least one character.

I'm sorry, but when I witness a monster reduce a 7th level fighter from full hit points to below -10 in one round I have to call BS on its challenge rating of 5.

I think that the Tarrasque is underrated too, probably they just wanted to put it inside MM1, and so they did, with max level 20... CR 20...
