I have 5 skilled players.
Also, I ran Gar earlier in the Fane... so he's not there to open the portal...

The portal is already open. The characters still need to destroy it by tossing Drown into it. And the Aboleth wants to claim Drown so he can become Olhydra's prophet and summon her.

Yeah, he ended up being a pushover for my group. They used an Arcane Eye to scout the node prior to attacking him. However, they had not fought Gar yet, and he gave them a run for their money.

I ended up using the Aboleth again, though, by running the Nihileth scenario from the Tome of Beasts. That time, he definitely surprised and worried them.

I actually ran the Aboleth as a whole separate scenario with him attempting to abduct party members and examine their pasts and futures as an exposition tool. I also made it three Aboleths. The party had to "break out" of a dream of sorts. So... I kinda went pretty far away from the books.

I haven't run Princes of the Apocalypse, but the one time I ran an Aboleth I tried to make pretty hefty use of their telepathy and ability to read minds. As soon as the players entered the chamber it made telepathic contact and knew their desires. Then offered them what they wanted because it is an ancient being with a racial memory longer than the gods and more than enough treasure.

I was able to get some good mileage out of it (got one player to betray the party and go NPC protector for the Aboleth in exchange for a chest full of platinum) and the NPC wife of one of the players became a GOO warlock that day at the urging of her new patron. It was glorious.

So yeah, if you've got a player with an easily exploited weakness, play with it. Aboleths are pretty mucht eh smartest, oldest, and biggest liars in the room, and you could potentially get the players to make a deal. it'd help if all that happened without them seeing it though, giant slimy fish monsters are hard to trust for some reason.
