Potential New d20 Product Survey

Hi, All.

It's been a long time since I posted, but I'm hoping that the community here can help me out. I'm considering joining the throngs of d20 publishers, but I'm looking at working on something of a niche product. Since the project would be more of a hobby for me than a real job, I'd like to find out what the response might be before I begin. So, here's the question...

Would you be interested in purchasing complete one-shot adventures in PDF format, designed to be completed in a single night's play?

Basically, I'm looking at publishing one-shot fantasy adventures for the d20 System, designed to provide a complete story in a single night of play. I'm going on the premise that there are more gamers out there like me, who love the game but don't have the ability to keep up regular gaming sessions. When I can get together with my friends to play, we never know when the next session will be. I like to use the one-shot concept, so that we get a sense of accomplishment by finishing the story. These adventures would be designed to provide the same thing for DMs who want to run a complete adventure in one night...or to simply have a pre-made one-shot on hand for nights when the whole group can't get together and you don't want to continue the main campaign.

There are alreay a lot of these out there, and more to the point, one shots to be played in a single night are a lot easier to prepare yourself than ones that are more (I hate to use the word but for lack of a better term) epic in nature that are designed tp span multiple sessions.

I usually avoid PDF products that are either too short or too long. The ideal length for a PDF adventure, in my mind, is between 40 and 60 pages. Any less than that and it's probably not worth it for me and any longer than that and it will probably be too expensive to print out.

From what I've seen, adventures are tough sells, though you do have a good idea for a product.

Keep in mind that there are some great companies (such as Goodman Games and Alamara) out there who have developed a strong presence with adventures and adventure-related products.

This is good feedback, Darrin. Thanks. I guess my goal was to provide one-shots that really are one-nighters. It seems to me that creating a one-shot is more complicated than simply developing a short adventure. Most GMs can run a one-night game on the fly. But it's another thing to create a complete story arc and design the right number and types of encounters to ensure that the came can be played within a set amount of time. My goal would be to provide such a product with enough detail to give the GM a break, too. This idea is still in its infancy, so I'm certainly willing to listen to the voice(s) of experience as I flesh it out. Perhaps it might be better to simply include these kinds of adventures in longer sourcebook-type products, thus adding to the PDF's value. Definitely something to think on.
