Potions underwater

Perhaps you could sidestep the issue altogether, by assuming that "potions" made by undersea races would not involve traditional containers and fluids. Perhaps the merfolk infuse soft corals with appropriate ingredients and magics, to make a "potion" that one chews and swallows to activate. Perhaps the locathah have learned to contain their consumable magics within sea sponges or spheres of seaweed.

Envision a cuttlefish with Ink of Extra Healing. Now THAT would be entertaining!

As I've said above, I've done this. Undersea races do have what are essentially non-liquid potions. The surface-dwelling races however make widespread use of the classic liquid kind. The intention of this thread was for me to learn some of the physics of underwater potion-drinking, not to find a way to cut potions from the setting.

Undersea dwelling races use potion bladders. These are essentially small sealed skins that are designed to have their seal broken with the mouth and the potion drunk from the skin in a few gulps.

I'm a fan of not allowing regular topside potions to be useable underwater as it is more a function of design. Besides I like to have undersea adventures 'feel' different rather than just be regular adventures re-skinned for beneath the waves.

That sounds familiar.

Is that anything like what some sports-drinks like Powerade have? The little rubbery thing inside the nozzle that prevents the drink from coming out when you turn it upside down, but lets you drink if you actually suck the liquid through?

Whether it is or isn't the same thing... That's not a bad idea for a special type of waterskin.

Couple that with a more viscous formula for potions, and you get:

Ahaha, I know it's probably some type of candy, but that stuff looks like the tubes of coloured glitter goo that I used to have in my art supplies.

(Must remember not to eat glitter... It doesn't heal you.)
