Potteresque touches to a magic system

Cheiromancer

I was thinking that there are various features of the magic system in the Harry Potter novels that could be imported quite easily for a change of flavor. Not a full blown conversion, just a few touches here and there. For instance:

1. Spells with somatic components require a wand as a focus. (Maybe eliminate spell pouches?)

2. Fly requires a broomstick as a focus.

3. No life restoring magics.

4. No spells that create food.

5. Fake latin names for spells (Actually, I seem to recall seeing a list of such names somewhere).

What else can go on the list?

Not sure about the food thing... Dumbledore often made the feast appear at different times with food abounding all the table of the great hall.

For lots of HP goodies (including lists of magic, spells, items, etc) go here:

But that food was prepared by house elves ahead of time. Dumbledore just conjured it to a new location.

A neat trick in itself, and not something the kids were ever taught in the series as far as I remember...

As far as the food appearing in the Great Hall, that could have been a function of the Great Hall--after all the feast is already laid out by house elves on identical tables directly beneath the Great Hall. It could also function much like the Accio charm....

Food cannot be conjured out of nothing...but a talented witch or wizard can do quite a lot with minimal ingredients.
