Power Cards or Sheets?

Power cards or sheet?

I had to vote for 'I don't play 4e', but for clarification; at this time I have only DM'd 4e and don't see the opprotunity to 'play' coming anytime soon. Everyone who plays in my game currently use cards and they seem to like them.

Without having sat on the other side of the screen, my opinion of cards is the same as the young guy in posted comic. Too much like Magic: The Roleplaying Game.

I'm not sure how to vote. The cards seemed like a no-brainer to me so I fired up InDesign and made a set for each of my players. I'm not certain it has increased productivity at the table. It might even be slowing us down. I'm thinking of moving to a sheet.

I'm totally with the cards. I put every power, including class abilities, magic item powers, and so on, onto cards. I find it really makes it easy to manage all my options. In play, I pretty much only use my character sheet to track hp. (Though it's obviously also home for my core info, such as stats, as well as my equipment inventory.)

I'm sympathetic to the table space argument. An one of the games I'm in is played in a living room, on sofas around a large coffee table. Cards are definitely harder to manage in that situation.

We haven't moved to 4e, yet, but my wife is playing a Warblade. I condensed her maneuver descriptions to fit the 4e card formatting and printed them out for her. I expected her to cut them out, but she finds it easier to keep them on a page and cover them with poker chips as she uses them.

I do a combination, really. I print and cut out cards, then stick them in collectible card sheets rather than individual card protectors. I use the Grandpa cards from here on ENWorld, but I find that I've been mostly just using the template and customizing my own rather than using any premade ones.

This way I can:
  • mark individual powers used with a wet-erase pen
  • make note of temporary bonuses
  • rearrange the placement of individual powers

I also have enough cards crafted that I can refer to cards rather than the book almost all the time. The only time I have to get my book out is to look over the magic item list.

BTW, here's the character sheet I'm using. This one still has all the powers listed on it, although those will be removed (probably the next time I level up). The cards are the same as the powers on this sheet; I just print them--three to a 3x5 card!--and cut them out.

I tried using Shado's power sheet, and let me tell you, that one ain't Flaming Sphere-friendly.

By the same token, a sheet that gives enough space to fill in all the relevant stuff on Flaming Sphere, will be looking empty as heck when you put Magic Missile on it.
