Let's also not forget The "Toy Iconics" of the early 80's - Strongheart the Paladin; Zarak the Orc Assassin; Ringlerun the Wizard; Kelek the Wizard; Skylla the female Wizard (didn't have a lot of female action figures at the time); Warduke the Fighter; and a host of others I can't recall. Many of them turned up in the old D&D cartoon, you no doubt remember. :)
I've still got a bunch of these on the shelf! How could you forget Melf the Elf? I think they changed his name a few times, but that's what he was called when I got him. And the poor "Male Titan" didn't even get a name. :( Most, if not all, of the toy characters were given BAsic D&D stats in AC 1: The Shady Dragon Inn http://acaeum.com/DDIndexes/MiscPages/MiscScans/AC1.html

It has a nice, big map of an inn, though. Even set up with 5' squares for miniatures. I can't really speak to the characters in the booklet, I've only looked through that part of it once or twice, when I noticed all the toy figures had stats.

HEY! Back off from my 106 Pregenerated NPC's built for your GM'ing Pleasure! :p

It wasn't exactly the best thing on the market, but I do remember it as among the first supplements I bought. (Mostly because it was one of the FEW RPG things available at the Circus World in those days.)

I still have a copy or 2 of The Sleeping Dragon Inn, & it's OK--kinda handy for any D&D Rules Cyclopedia-style games you might run. The map has just proven to be extremely handy at times. Liked the Jim Holloway art for the NPCs in it (though the toys kept the art used on the packaging/concept art available, though). The NPC descriptions were interesting, though stat-wise, some of them were just plain weird.

And the toy "iconic" stats---not too shabby. I think some of them in this source didn't match the stats provided in that Heartstone adventure. However, I do know that some characters covered in Heartstone weren't covered in Sleeping Dragon (like the Viking & ranger), but a few characters in Sleeping Dragon weren't covered in Heartstone (Fox Fingers comes to mind, as well as the evil female cleric in love with Warduke).

I know that a lot of in-text examples of "iconics" have been provided (like Party A & Party B), but what about art-based "iconics" like Emirikol? Would the party of adventurers with their slain young dragon by Elmore (2nd ed. PH) count? What about the "tapestry" showing adveturers delving into a dungeon & fighting opponents decorating the borders of treasure & encounter charts in the 1st ed. DMG?

Yeah the Moldvay Iconics are what I remember best, but anyone remember these and where they came from? :D

Presto The Elf
Luven Lightfingers
Kay En' Telva (sp)
Phanstern
Gleep Wurp
Blodgett (easy)

And for some other non-D&D games

Drogo Nimblefingers
Rurik the Restless
Ariella the Priestess
Ayatollah Chinta Kari
Cormac The Pict

I'll think of some more later when I'm home and have my gaming books :D

2E? you mean Rath the dwarf fighter, Delsenora the wizard, Beornhelm, Joinville the illusionist, Ragnar the thief, Cwell the Fine, Morrison the Multi-Faceted, Tarus Bloodheart, Thule, Rupert the half-elf, Gorus, Johann, Fiera the elf, Brondvrouw the gnome, Megarran, Drelb, and Targash? ;)

ZOIKS! Either you have an amazing memory, or you have the book open right in front of you, *or* you have waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on your hands.

That was impressive! (the list, I mean)

Wasn't there a female fighter in the First Ed. books (her picture showed long, shoulder-length hair, and although the drawing was B&W I always imagined her as a redhead) called Morgan LeFay or something? ...Or is that Morgan Ironwolf? At the risk of sounding kinda...freaky...did anyone else think she was pretty hot? :p

Strongheart the Paladin; Zarak the Orc Assassin....OMFG, that's when I was in my early teens and first really started understanding what D&D was all about! (Early teens = worst time of my life EVAR) Brings back memories (and a small misty tear to the eye)...! And I had both of these action figures, too....
