Pre-Order DLC comes to D&D with Xanathar's Guide to Everything

Anyone who plays videos games knows pre-order bonuses for those willing to pay in advance of product launch. WotC's official toolset, D&D Beyond, is adopting this practice with 16 bonus feats exclusive to those who pre-order Xanathar's Guide to Everything on D&D Beyond.

Here's what they're offering:

We're excited to announce the bonuses you will receive for pre-ordering Xanathar's Guide to Everything on D&D Beyond:
[h=4]Expanded Racial Feats[/h]You'll get access to 16 new racial feats for all the races available on D&D Beyond outside the Player's Handbook - from the aaracokra to the yuan-ti pureblood. The book comes out on 10th November, 2017.

The extra feats from Curse are officially licensed? I don't think that's correct. Well, correct in the summer that Curse has a license, but those feats could be dropped under the OGL, unless they contain WotC IP. But that's just for the names used, not the feat mechanics. Again, if that trips your bug, how did you make it through 3e?
The 3e situation is a little different. Because there was a lot of OGL material, but very little was the result of direct agreement with WotC. It's not like Code Monkey released much original content.
The only "officially licensed" stuff I'm aware off (with the related logo logo) was the Dragonlance and Ravenloft material and the magazines.

As for how I made it through 3e... the answer is "not well"

Incidentally, don’t ever order food at a pub in the UK! You have to order and pay at the bar in advance. Immensely stupid, I know.
So completely off topic but that completely threw me in my first visit to London.
The wife and I found a random pub for lunch and sat down, and waited for someone to come around and take the order. Like they do in North American pubs. And most of the Scottish ones I'd been to previously. And we were still pretty jet lagged and shy and couldn't work up the courage to ask someone and look stupid. So we just sat there...

While the food itself can often be comparable (location dependent, of course), there’s (generally) a different system for pubs as opposed to restaurants. Though there’s some overlap; it’s not a rule or anything.

I guess you don't order from dmsguild or drivethrurpg?

Yes and no. There are free items (and I do mean free, not pay-what-you-want) that I have gotten from DM's Guild. I have also bought PDFs of the AD&D 2e core books from DM's guild, but then again I used to own paper copies of those before I lost them in a move several years ago, so I can't honestly say I bought those sight-unseen.

You only get to see a little snippet of the product before purchasing it.

At least with a preview you can attempt to make an informed judgement about the overall quality of the product from the material they did show you. What they show you may not be representative of the product as a whole, which is why I usually wait until several product reviews are out, but having something to go on is far better than buying something sight-unseen.

This is confusing me, so are these new mechanics and expanded material official or not?

This is what turns me off to 5e. The material is SCARCE from WotC. 3rd Party there's a ton, sure, but I'm not looking for 3PP. I am strictly official material and miss the days of new material every month.

This is why I enjoy Pathfinder more. Lots of options.
