Pre-reqs for Prestige Classes

Ok. I know that a character has to have all of the pre-requisites prior to taking a Prestige Class. That's pretty self-explanatory.

But here's my question. Let's say a character just makes level six. At this point they meet all the pre-reqs to make a Prestige Class except one; they need to have one more specific feat. BUT, the character just hit 6th level, so they are allowed to choose a feat and choose that one. Does that mean, at 6th level, the character will then be allowed to choose a level of the prestige class? Or will the character have to wait until 7th level to take a level of the prestige class?

Technically, they do meet all the requirements prior to taking on a level of prestige, but I'm not sure exactly how open to interpretation the rules are.

I would guess that you choose class before feat, as otherwise a Fighter's bonus feats wouldn't work.

Okay, this is a topic that just bugs me. Not only was the question addressed in the DnD FAQ, it is addressed rather clearly in the PH, page 145.

There is a step-by-step process for leveling up a character, the first step is Choose Class, be it Fighter, Mage, PrC, etc. Step Seven is to Select feats.

If you don't meet the prereq's before you begin Step One, then you can't take the class... This is not a "bug" in the PrC system as some people often complain, but rather a intentional feature.

(As an aside, the step by step nature does make stating out a character begining at high levels annoying; but thats the way love goes...)

Thanks for the answer. BTW, sorry some of us don't have time to read through all the *M's out there. I guess going to class full time, holding a full time job and having a new baby takes up most of our time. Next time, please try to be a little more considerate and think that just maybe some of us have tried to find the answer and couldn't and decided to post on this board as a last resort because, for some reason, when a question is asked people tend to answer them rudely (see above for example).

Okay, my apologies, I didn't mean to sound as harsh as I did!

There really should have been a "" (or fifty) included in that post... I guess this is a good lesson in why you shouldn't post after having a fight with your signifigant other...

But in my defense, the PH is pretty specific on this point... of course, this info is in the chunk of the book most people only read once- if they read it at all. I know that for the longest most of my own group (about 15 people in all) got this leveling up sequence wrong.

Resulting in all kinds of mishaps like retroactive skill points from INT gain; retroactive HP from CON; entering PrCs too early. This caused problems with the players that did follow the proper steps...

WotC really should have included this info in the Character Classes chapter. They didn't, it confuses people, and I go and insult them on forums...

Maybe I should sue WotC for defamation? Their printing polices have made me into a real jack***.

Um you DO gain HP retroactively from gaining con; pg 9, paragraph under the bulleted items in constitution

"If a character's Constitution changes enough to alter his or her Constitution modifier, his or her hit points also increase or decrease accordingly at the same time"
