Prep without players - wasted?

Improvised play is plain tiring. Seems to help to:

have more breaks
allow time outs to halt anything that's going off track
agree some basic 'railroading' to outline a 'structure' and plotting
build 'skeleton' scenarios and campaigns, ready to be 'fleshed-out' and slotted in as required

maybe go rules lighter. I prefer a more tactical Catan meets deck-builder approach but you sound like a D&D enthusiast. Essentials might lighten the load and make lots of apprentice GMs to give you the odd night off and let you play with smaller groups?
