Prestige Class woes

Well since i don't spend 15 hours a day online, or have ten thousand posts, i'm usually in a rush to get my posts out before i have to get back to real life.

Yes, yes, they all say this. Next you'll be saying to read what you think, not what you write, yes?

If I only used what I "needed", I'd be living in a cave somewhere.

You know, I might have said this before.

Well, core classes and feats are all i need OR want. So i suppose thats where my opinions come from.

Considering the number of posts you have, i can almost guarantee you you've said that before! ;)

LOL. Because, Lord knows we've never been able to manage campaign concepts before prestige classes. Since when have gamers been bred not to have their own imaginations?

So, oh "imaginative one", tell me why you buy these things called "rulebooks" again.

People's ooh's and ahh's about the 8th prestige class book per month that come out reminds me of ravenous Magic the Gathering junkies that'd shred you if were in line in front of them when they are trying to get to the newest card set that just came out. Prestige Classes are WOTC's newest rpg-crack.

I think you mixed up the mindless-miniatures-flame with the mindless-prestige class-flame.

Suboptimal sez you, freedom without restriction sez I. Prestige classes restrict character concepts and for my money, come come anywhere near close to doing what is credited them to be for. :D

Your keyboard is running away from your brain again.

In any case, first you babble on about there being too many PrCs, and then you babble on about PrCs being too restrictive. There is a certain disconnect there that you have perhaps failed to notice in your haste to babble.

"And back in the dim dark ages, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, colour television was still in its infancy, and people DID NOT HAVE instant messaging, goldurnit, yes, back then we walked to school uphill, both ways, through the snow...."

Impossible! I have it stapled to my arm now. I could use some disinfectant, though.

Yes, there are way too many prestige classes and they are a crappy and ironically restrictive game mechanic. So i think its a general problem with D&D. You can't make that connection?

Really, i don't think i can take YOU seriously when you try to scold me about babbling. :)

They're used as suppositories. Trust me, I'm a statistician.

Yes, that's the THIRD thing they always say, right after "I have a real life!", and "read what I think, not what I write".

Impossible! I have it stapled to my arm now. I could use some disinfectant, though.

No, grasshopper. The "restriction" you speak of is a nonexistent one in play, because the choice whether to take a given prestige class or not is (generally) in the hands of the player. If you consider a prestige class to be unsuitable for the character concept you have in mind, you can simply opt not to take it. Given the pool of PrCs available nowadays, this constitutes no more a restriction on choice than does only drinking decaf in Starbuck's.

So i think its a general problem with D&D. You can't make that connection?

It's a general problem with DMs who get too fixated on backstage issues, when what really matters is what takes place around the PCs themselves.

Really, i don't think i can take YOU seriously when you try to scold me about babbling. :)

OH NOES PJMASON IS NOT TAKING ME SERIOUSLY. I AM WOUNDED TO THE DEATH.

I can never remember. Had you evolved opposable thumbs back then, or did that come about with 2E?
