Upon a critical hit, this weapon forces the target to make a fortitude save with a DC of 10 + damage dealt (just like a coup de crâce) or die. Creatures immune to critical hits are immune to that as well.

This enhancement effectively replaces Vorpal in my campaigns. The prerequisites are the same as Vorpal, but it's a viable choice for all sorts of weapons, not just slashing.

Cool! I'm going to snarf this as a perfect replacement for Vorpal IMC. However, it's going to require a Fort save vs. the damage done, not 10+Damage, since a Critical Hit can do quite a bit of damage.

I believe something like this already exists in the Psionics Handbook. I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head, but you might want to peek in there...

It's a +5 Enhancement Equivalent ability.

I'd just leave it as raw damage dealt, also. A critical hit can easily do damage in the 100s in the wrong hands.

This is neat because it forces deliberation between various weapons.

Exactly. Otherwise, a Vorpal Rapier is the best weapon, and that's just silly.

A Vorpal Greataxe should be really scarry, and it's not, becuase it "activates" half as often as a Vorpal Greatsword.

With this enchantment, it's scarry again -- it's going to be HARD to make an x3 Crit Fort save.

I put it at the same level as Vorpal. I have two reasons for this:

1) As most everyone has said, the damage adjustments can make this a really effective weapon, especially on something like a great axe, or scythe.

2) Since this works on ALL weapons, that's a big difference from vorpal.

All in all, I think this is a better ability than vorpal, which I have never been partial to in any edition that it's been a part of.

I'm not sure about the name though, but I like the concept. And you HAVE to drop the base dc of 10, the DC should be damage dealt, as stated by most everyone here. Mercurial Flamberges are just SICK!!!

I'd have to say it's a hair better than vorpal in some ways. Vorpal gives you a decapitation, but some monsters(and many people), lose nothing vital by being decapitated and therefore survive.

There's already an equivalent for piercing weapons: skewering (don't remember where I saw that, though). So that's not really a big factor. Also, why should it be more expensive for slashing weapons, only because you can use it on the other weapons, too?

I just wanted to keep it like the CdG. Also, with a dagger, you could get fort saves with a DC of 4 or something if you drop the 10.
