Pricing a Magic Item

First Post
One of my players wants a non-standard magic item. He has the appropriate feat, so he doesn't have to worry about contracting a mage to make it for him. The problem, however is what the price should be.

He (desperately) wants his character to have a cloak of Willpower. He doesn't care about the other two saves, so he doesn't want to waste the money on a Cloak of Resistance. How much should a Cloak of Willpower +2 cost?

Cloak of Resistance +2 = 4,000 gp

From the SRD (creating magic items):
Resistance bonus Bonus squared x 1,000 gp
Save bonus (limited) Bonus squared x 250 gp

What does "Save bonus (limited)" mean? What kind of bonus type is that? And is that the entry that I should be looking at?

Save Bonus limited means the item grants saves versus a particular thing like poison or disease.

For what the player wants to create I would use this formula. Bonus squared x 600. It's cheaper then a normal cloak of resistance, but then again it's slightly more expensive then most people would think that an item granting a save to only one saving throw should be. Item pricing is wonky and will always be wonky. bonus squared x 600 seems about right to me for only a bonus to one save. If the player wanted to create an item with only 2 of the 3 saves then the formula would be bonus squared x 800.

I personally would stay away from having an item with only 2 saves out of the 3. 1 I can see, but for some reason, 2 is just odd. Kinda like no big toe in a way. Just, strange and somewhat freaky.

What Berk said (all except for the price). That magic item, as listed, would add +2 to all saves, not just Will saves. If it only added to Will saves, you should divide the cost by 3.

Doesn't "Save bonus (limited)" mean either Fort, or Reflex, or Will?

So the price should be 2^2 * 250gp = 1000gp for a Cloak of Willpower +2 (assuming whatisitgoodfor meant +2 to Will saves)

Sorry about any confusion, I listed the price of a Cloak of Resistance +2 in order to give a reference starting point that people wouldn't have to look up. I fully realize that it give a resistance bonus to all three save types.

Just dividing the price of a Cloak of Resistance by 3 to get the price of a Cloak of (bonus to will saves) wouldn't be appropriate, since magic items don't work like that. When you stick multiple similar funtions on a magic item, the prices don't simply add. Each extra function actually gets cheaper. Of course even that doesn't really work considering how the price of a Cloak of Resistance is calculated. (For reference, the price of a single +2, using the similar abilities thing would be 1778gp.)

So far, no one has answered my question about what the bonus type on "Save bonus (limited)" is. The only item I can find like that in the SRD is the Periapt of Proof Against Poison, which offers a +4 Luck bonus to saves against poison, for 4000 gp.

This does follow the formula (b^2 *250), so does that mean that the limited save bonus is always a Luck bonus?

Finally, the character (I think) only wants the Will bonus to help against Psi Combat. Would that be an appropriate limitation for a Limited Save bonus?

Victim already answered you (and I forgot to hit "submit reply" a good while ago :o).
