Pricing for a spell penetration item?

he second option makes feats way too cheap at higher leels IMO.

Depends on the feat, and if you can use it for prereq's of other feats or not.

An item that granted the toughness feat would be worth almost nothing, while granting whirlwind is pretty impressive.. both in cost and effect.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. That guideline makes useful feats too cheap. I really miss that "rolleyes" smiley. :)

Per the RAW you can use it for preqs. Virtual prereqs are allowed, but you would lose access to the new feat if you lost the item's powers.

Maybe feats should be handled like spells? Like 'earliest you could get this spell' = caster level...

Or something.

I definitely think that level^2*1,000gp would be too cheap.

That would be 4k to duplicate the effect of a feat and 16k to duplicate the effect of two feats. Feats are a scarce resource, so duplicating their effects should be more costly!

level^2*2,500gp sounds more like it.

Defensive items are generally priced cheaper than offense. Spell Penetration is definitely offense, so the 1000gp pricing is too cheap.

I think the Robe of the Archmagi breakdown is on the right path, just don't forget the added cost of additional effects in the same item.

I can think of two arguments against that cost level:
(1) characters can get separated from their magic items, but it's much harder to seperate them from their feats
(2) I don't think +n to spell penetration is much better than +n to a stat (if it's better at all), and stat boosts are n^2*1000.

Is there not some Psionic item in the old PsiHB that provides this benefit? Not sure, but I seem to recall this was the case. Not anywhere near my books for the next week, so I can't check, either.

So our current plan is for Alomir to create a "robe of the alienist," dumping the SR18 spell resistance (SR18 is fairly useless at high levels) and adding some interesting alienist abilities in instead with the 60K he saves. There's this very interesting 6th lvl psionic power that's just right for an alienist.... :D

That is a very strong argument.

It is obvious that +2 to Int is going to be more valuable overall to a Wizard than +2 to defeating SR in all but corner cases. That is strong evidence that (n^2*1000) cannot be far off, perhaps even too high.

The potential stackability advantages (i.e. gain both +2 to Int and +2 to defeat SR) are reasonably balanced against the fact that SR is not always relavent.
