Primal Power Excerpt - Stonefire Rager

Short answer: hated the image, ignored the article, won't allow on my games, life moves on.
Not to call into question your DMing style, but is the "won't allow on my games" part based on any reason beyond your reaction to an illustration?

I mean, if you had a player come up to you, excited to play this paragon path, would you tell them they couldn't because you think it looks dumb?

I seriously doubt any of my players would be excited playing a dwarf barbarian with a magma arm.

EDIT: its me or EN is ultra slow today?

Is there _ANYTHING_ new that won't be compared to videogames?

I'm somewhat concerned that it seems like anything "different" from the past is either attributed to videogames or anime.

I kinda hate the constant reshoveling of the past. It's very anti-newbie friendly where it seems like the designers of an IP have to constantly pander to the base.

Try something different people.

Paramount must be kissing the feet of Abrams since hebasically injected new life into a franchise that had been dwindling into a hardcore fanatical base. Now new Trek fans can feel like their part of something without having to learn the entire bloody history of Trek.

I've noticed that a lot of stuff lately (as in Resilience of Stone) has had a 'roll a d20. On a 10 or higher, do something' rather then just 'make a saving throw' Are the two different? Should you not allow save modifiers to these rolls?

Huh. I don't see a problem with the image. Well, I think it would just be better if the guy was completely covered in magma and rock. Just teh arms seems not right, to me.

But seriously, video game is not the first thing that came to mind. Honestly, it was something Superhero related.

But as soon as I saw that dwarf the first thing that comes to my mind (no kidding) was this:

No offense, but how in the world did you get MAGMA MAN from Mega Man from a Dwarf with molten skin? Seriously, that's not so far removed from looking at an apple and thinking 'carburetor!'

Nope.

but when applied to what I think a D&D barbarian should be, IMHO, it deserves an "epic fail lolz"...

Yeah, I know that my barbarian should be Fighter's Battlerager but I can't stop thinking that this doesn't look like Conan at all.

Conan has never been the D&D Barbarian. Conan started out a *thief* in Tower of the Elephant, effectively. He didn't have a berserker fury he could trigger at will, either. IMO, he's absolutely Fighter/Rogue.

Bingo!

The Powers That Be have apparently declared that videogames and anime are not valid mediums for expression or influence of the fantasy genre.

But, it is a facet of human existence. Same as saying 'Their old stuff is better, they totally sold out now" with bands. To each their own.

For some people, rock and roll stopped with the Beatles.

For pictures like these, I tend to think that the person is transitioning into a new form, but the picture is in-between. Look at some Genasi pics. One of them has a guy who is part fire, part something else (lightning?). It's not that he always looks like that, but he's shifting between the forms. Same here.
Personally, I loved it. A lot. Some Barbarian powers are wicked and hit a lot of people. The ability to knock everyone prone in such a massive area is truly mind-boggling.

I think they are not called saves to avoid unforseen benefits of getting a bonus to a saving throw. Abilities that boost saves where balanced on normal "save ends" conditions, not other effects.

I'm not a conservative man. I'll give a shot to any new edition or any new system if I can. But there's no way I could like a dwarf melting stone barbarian... by the way, I believe I didn't express myself very well on my first message. I do LOVE videogames.

Now you are trying to tell me what kind of image associations I can do? That's weird. I was playing Megaman yesterday, dude.

I never claimed he was "THE" D&D barbarian, you are correct by the rules, but when I start finding people who call Conan the "fighter/thief" instead of "barbarian" I'll give you some credit ;)

Why people want me to bow at every little thing Wotc does?

I don't like stone melting barbarians, period.

I like this paragon path, both in flavor, mechanics, and visually. I find the elemental connection of the current barbarian class very inspiring, and this specific instance - a primal warrior of an earth-born race channeling the powers of the burning stone - a fantastic image.
