Yeah, that's the concept I was thinking of as well. Survival may be your character concept, but it needn't be your character's *motivation*. So start taking some more risks in-character, even if you keep working on his survivability out-of-character. Jump into the middle of the enemies and set up flanking positions with the other melee PCs (esp. the rogue). Or run straight to the enemies back line to attack their spellcasters. Give your own spellcasters permission to use area attacks while you're within range.
