Profession: Tanner

Ok. So one of my players is going to be playing a character that is a leather tanner.

Problem: I know JACK about leather tanning.

Tapping the vast wealth of knowledge that is ENWorld, I ask:

Can anyone give me some idea how this was done?

Thanks

Isn't this supposed to be Craft (Tanner)?

Profession usually is a service industry, or at the least creates a non-durable good. Durable goods almost always mean Craft skill, or at least that was my impression.

No, but I have a brand new nephew who was born yesterday ... and his name is Tanner!

Coincidence? I think not!

:D

Seriously though

Well. Tanner is listed as a Profession under the 3.0 skill description.

Regardless... how do you do it? What is involved?

Tanning is a friendless job when performed au naturale. If you think an alchemist's lab smelled bad, you would not believe the stuff tanners use...

Ug, now I'm imagining what a portable tanner's kit would contain.

Portable stuff

Nasty - piss and brain grey matter. Not sure the exact steps but that is some of the stuff used.

Yeah, but you wouldn't need to haul that around with you. The animal your skinning came with it's own brains (one hopes), and you can make your own piss as needed. While tanning can get pretty sophisticated, primitive tanning can be perfectly functional (if time consuming) useing nothing more than the animals own bits and some water.

From what a quick read if those websites gleaned for me it seems to me that a portable tanners kit would be a scraping tool, maybe some tannin or dye concentrates and some tools to work the leather afterwards, like an awl and a knife.
