D&D 5E Proficiency Die Variant

Anyone using the proficiency die variant from the DMG? I switched to it and I like it a lot. I am thinking about switching ability and other mods to dice rolls as well. 5e started that transition by replace many circumstantial bonuses with advantage. I am still mulling over replacing the other mods with dice but really like the prof die.

What about you?

I made it optional in my group and 4 out of 5 players have gone for it and enjoy it.

I use flat numbers for NPCs (at least for now)

Just brainstorming to replace enhancement mods with dice I want something that is easily distinguishable from the other dice since it applies to both attack and damage. I am thinking using boost dice from Edge of the Empire. They have two sides with nothing (results of 0), two sides with one symbol (result of 1), and two sides with two symbols (results of 2). Then you use the number of these "enhancement" dice equal to the plus of the weapon.

Hmm . . . maybe.

I would totally use proficiency dice instead of flat bonus if I ran my games in person, but since I run most if not all of my games online using Fantasy Grounds II, it is hardwired to use flat bonus.

I (DM) enjoy the use of proficiency dice, as did some of my players, back when we were using the beta play test rules. It was novel.

However, I have a couple players who always roll one die... at... a... time... Slows down the action enough that I didn't bother reintroducing proficiency dice after the DMG was published. YMMV.

I can sympathize. I knew a player who HAD to recalculate every modifier BEFORE making a roll. Even if he was making multiple attacks and the modifier hadn't changed in the 2 seconds since his last roll...
