Project: Phoenix: A M&M Campaign Concept

Knightfall

World of Kulan DM
The Premise
Project: Phoenix is a concept that I've been kicking around since d20 Modern was announced. I was going to design it based on that ruleset but decided against it once Mutants & Masterminds came out. (If this game concept actually makes it to print, it will likely be designed with M&M 3e, which was recently announced.)

It is set in the mid 21st century and includes elements of a superspy thriller and some near-future sci-fi. The world has expanded to the moon and has one or two remote colonies on Mars and maybe orbiting around Jupiter.

Now, the Phoenix isn't a ship, it is a person. This person is a famous pin-up model who moonlights as a spy. Her code name is the Phoenix. Her employer, Danger Management, recruited her to protect the world from terrorists and enemy spy rings. The Phoenix works out so well that Danger Management sets up a glamour magazine as a front for hiring other famous models and actresses/actors to double as spies for the company.

In fact, the entire magazine's staff are spies: photographers, public relations gurus, editors, hair & makeup girls, etc.

So the idea is that these models and actors take photo shoots and film movies based on where Danger Management needs them to infiltrate. Shooting that action movie in Paris is the perfect cover to foil an international diamond smuggling ring, that glamour photo shoot in Hawaii is the perfect cover to bring down that cult sacrificing locals to their evil surfer gods.

Of course, there are a few less than famous members of the Phoenix Project. Those wannabe stars that haven't made it to the higher ranks of the Project. Now, not only do you need to look good and be able to act, but also you have to be able to kick some serious terrorist butt too.

So, what does everyone think?

"Evil surfer gods"?

I'm in!

And posing for Playboy is the perfect cover for trying to find out why Hugh M. Hefner has the sexual appetite of a man one-tenth his age.... :D

Heh, surf's up dude!

And BTW, I'm considering writing this as an actual sourcebook / campaign setting. Not just as a homebrew setting.

Gotta heal up my injured arm/wrist/hand first.

Well, only problem I can see is that someone is going to correlate all these major bust, and is going to realize that they all occur when a shoot/fashion thingamajiggy is going on. Unless, of course, you're keeping the bust secret, which given the nature of the organization wouldn't be too hard.

Other than minor problems, though, this is hella cool. I love futuristic settings, and while yours is cool I only wish we could have Jupiter colonies in 150 years. Just make sure you don't have an hardcore scifi fans in your group and you're good. Those guys can be worse than rules lawyers. ;)

Two things I don't like:

1) Future setting. I think it's unneccsary, and just complicates the whole thing. Just give 'em James Bond stuff and call it high tech -- it's hard enough keeping up with the present day world, much less a new world with new places and politics and people... ug... ;)

2) Named after a character who is still alive. What if she's killed? That would be... inconvienient. Also, you have to make sure she doesn't become an Elminster (uber-dude who really should be the one on all these important missions).

Otherwise, this is the coolest idea I have heard yet for a d20 Modern campaign. I envision a kind of Just Shoot Me/James Bond mix going on, and I like it. Consider the idea yoinked, or at least thought about and forgotten in the bustle of day to day life. An honor, if you were wondering :D

Because future setting + photo shoot = awesome.

Imagine: Europa, Jupiter's most active moon. The model is stretched out on the surface, nude, bright silver hair forming a halo perfectly framing her face, the whole scene backed by Jupiter's full glory...

Don't think lasers and tons of aliens... think, more like Firefly but scaled back considerably. The only real colony would be the Luna colony (including large residental areas, businesses and entertainment district). All other outposts would be simple mining or military outposts. A few on Mars, the Asteroid Belt and a single 'farpost' orbiting Jupiter.

Ahh, but it depends on who happens to be the Phoenix at the time. Team Phoenix is made up of the elite of the Project: Phoenix members. The current Phoenix is Anna Ryder but she is the third person to have that code name. (Her main counterpart on Team Phoenix is Billy Kidd, a sharpshooter who has been enhanced with the DNA [and memories] of William H. Bonney.)

A player's PC can aspire to become a member of Team Phoenix or even become the next Phoenix after Anna retires (or dies). This is how Anna became the Phoenix after her old mentor, a man now known as the Director, retired from active field work.

Of course, there are dozens of teams and your PC will originally be assigned to one. The best thing will to have your players form a single team if you have enough players. You PCs could also move from team to team depending on the whims of those in charge (Danger Management board of directors).

Anyway, this is still all in the works.
