And let us not forget 'Draugh', yet another related word, normally pertaining to animate dead men in Norse mythology. Neither the Norse nor the Celts drew all that fine a distinction between undead and fey. And for that matter the original Svartalfar or dark elves were sometimes referred to as 'Svirf' or dwarfs. Though at other times dwarfs were assumed to have formed as maggots in the flesh of the frost giant Ymir, after he was slain by the treachery of the god Wotan.
And yes, it is dwarfs not dwarves in spite of Mr. Tolkien.
