Protection from Arrows vs the Musket

I know this has been debated before, but I don't remember what the resolution was. Should the 2nd level spell, protection from arrows (normal missiles?) be able to block gunfire? I'm dealing with low end guns here, flintlock muskets to be exact.

The spell should work, IMHO. Compare a musket's bullet (a piece of simple steel, a stone or even salt (it does not cause severe injuries but it hurts ;)) with an arrow's tip: both are made from metal or stone. Ok, sometimes a tip of bone or hardened wood is used, but that's rarely the case.
I'd say that the spell protects also against gunfire from modern weapons. The duration would be quite short because a rifle can be fired more than once a round and deals more damage on a hit than a bolt or arrow...

BTW: Is there any errata regarding the reload time for a musket? One round is quite short for cleaning it, stuffing powder and a bullet in it and taking aim. Our house rule is a reload time of three rounds. The first muskets were quite unhandy and used to harm the opponent with one shot and then finishing him off in melee combat.

Should it "block" it? No, of course not, no more than it "blocks" arrows. It should provide exactly what the rules state, that is, DR 10/+1 against ranged weapons. Unless you're hitting him with the butt of the thing, musket fire counts as a ranged weapon, so it would provide the listed DR against the shot.

Given that a musket from the DMG does 1d12 damage, the DR wouldn't necessarily block the shot.

Why would it not?

Don't let the name fool you; it is just a legacy from previous editions.

Protection from Arrows gives 10/+1 protection against every conceivable ranged physical missile attack including, arrows, bolts, spears, ballistas, hurled boulders, trebuchet projectiles, .50 machine gun bursts and farm animals catapulted by annoying frenchmen.

Hmm, what damage would the impact of a cow do? It should be more than falling damage because it got some additional momentum from the catapult :D

Cow Damage

Technically, no, it should be just the falling damage, assuming you're hit by the cow on the falling part of its trajectory (a perfect arc, ideally). All the kinetic energy transferred into the cow by the catapult would be spent in getting the cow up to its maximum vertical height. Gravitic acceleration then causes the cow to fall toward point of impact.
So yeah, just falling damage. :D

Of course, if you're hit by the cow on its way up in the air (while riding a flying hippopotamus, say) the amount of damage would be determined by cow velocity and weight. The velocity would be a function of the catapult's power and firing angle, and the time since firing. This could be calculated, but it's pretty long-winded, not to mention pointless. An interesting fact, however, is that it would actually hurt less to be hit by the cow going up. :D
