D&D 5E Protection. Sword and board as Two weapon fighting?

Thank you all for your help. That's cleared it up nicely and I know how to pitch it to the DM.
If I were filling out a survey I would mark highly satisfied for resolving my issue ;)
Side note, I just came up w a one shot premise and I'm pitching it to the fam, trying to get a family night. I'm very excited about it. Not sure they'll bite but hoping. 2 have played. My mom will probably just for the sake of a family night, but the other 2 will be tough to get to agree. Wish me luck.
A Celtic themed one shot starting at a Halloween party. Samhain! Balor, Fomorians, Fir bolg, Merrow, selkie, banshee, Dullachan, the list goes on and on!

Anyone play with a buckler shield that gives +1AC, but would count as a light weapon to do away with Dual Wielder feat.

Hmmh. Tavern brawling shield wielding grappler. Sounds fun. Never thought about that possibility. It just came to my mind. Sounds like barbarian stuff to me...

Yes, after my Dwarf shield basher character, the DM added this option ruling the buckler (+1 AC) counted as a light improvised weapon. It works fine IMO. However, the one change was the buckler only did 1d3 damage, not 1d4. I argued about increasing it to 1d4 and having a shield (with Dual Wielder and Tavern Brawler both) do 1d6. *Meh* whatever works... :)

I reckon I'd allow a spiked buckler that did damage as dagger (d4, light, finesse, improvised) and +1 AC.

The 5e club (d4, blunt) is light, so I can see a good case for letting a heavy shield do d6, same as a staff.

The big issue IMO is the underpowered d6 spear, though it's short & throwable so maybe it's more of a javelin...
