D&D 4E Psst... hey man, wanna play 4e?

D&D 3rd edition was broken, unplayable at high levels, impossible for a DM to run, and, worst of all, completely unfun. Just ask Wizards of the Coast. They won't argue with these facts.
No one at WotC has said that 3E was completely unfun. What purpose does hyperbole like this serve?

Just because many people changed their minds and decided 3E was better than 2E doensn't mean they won't also change their minds now that 4E is even better (if that turns out to be the case). This is not a contradition. It would just mean that the game continues to improve with each edition. And even if 4E turns out to be wonderful, that is not to say that in seven or ten years there won't be sufficient learning and maturing of the game to produce an even better 5E.

But to answer the OP, yes, I am already meeting resistance from friends about trying out 4E, even though the folks I've talked to about this have not for the most part kept up with anything about the content of 4E. One group of firiends has reacted with rejection because they don't want to spend money on new books and products. My brother, on the other hand, has reacted based concern that it "won't be D&D any more". Both are legitimate concerns. But I think both concerns will be overcome if the game is fun and a good DM offers to run a game.

You'd be more than welcome with one of my gaming groups I'm sure. We're all going to 4e when it comes out. I run a weekly home game, another one at the local university, plus I have a PbP game going on right now (though it has stagnated for a while). Just a shame you're in Chatanooga.

Now, I can't help but feel that the days of the hushed whisper, "You like the new edition?" "YOU TOO?" will come back.

Anyone else feel that way?

Maybe, a little with 4E, mostly because no one really knows much about it. There's a lot of misinformation out in the real, non-internet, world, and snappy lines like, "It's just like WoW," are what people latch onto. I'm friends with my FLGS owner, and even though he's more knowledgeable than most, I was talking with him this weekend, and he was quoting speculation from months ago; I had to set him straight.

I didn't have the same experience with 3E, though. Personally, I had given up on 2E not long before the announcement of 3E, and the changes had me chompin' at the bit. Locally, 3E was not only accepted right away, but eagerly awaited, for the most part.

If the lead-up to 4E has any problems, it's that 3E isn't 2E, plain and simple.
