Publishers Action Plans to d20 Slump?

Hmmmm...

If this is the case, then what's your place in all this? After all, you don't even produce any products; you just run an online storefront with a few meager offerings, all from WOTC. It seems to me that if you don't want the pdf and pod publishers commenting, then you should have even less place commenting on a discussion about the D20 market than the pdf publishers.

Not as publishers, because obviously Joe targeted only the print publishers with his remarks. Also because POD and pdf publishers are two leagues down from the kind of publishers he's talking about (only exception would be Malhavoc, but he's a print publisher as well) and pdf publishing is a whole different ball game from print publishing (smaller and different customer base, etc.). I have absolutely no problem with a fan attitude, but a reply from a small time pdf publisher that reads like another sales pitch in a tread about print publisher rufles my feathers the wrong way...

What i'm doing here? Well, i'm primarily a fan, and secondly an online 'retailer' (i have a lot of D20/OGL products in stock but currently a small and private customer base). Hell, if people would rather i shut my trap i'm more than happy to comply ;-)

print publisher != pdf publisher
-= high stakes vs. low stakes =-
-=[ physical vs. electronic ]=-

ps. Dana and i ruffle each other's feather the wrong way, so ignore us ;-)

I see companies withdrawing from areas they aren't successful in (Monkeygod)...
Man, tell me about it! My adventure was the next item on the publishing schedule, and about 90% done when they had to make the decision to stop publishing adventures. Talk about timing!

Still, I completely agreed with their decision and the logic behind. Personally I felt really sad that my work was not gonna be published, but it is more important for them (MGE) to publish books that will make a name for the company and keep it in the arena of good and competitive d20 publishers.

I have to agree: quality over quantity wins any day, especially these days with the amount of d20 stuff out there. I think there are some companies that are absolutely great at this and have proven they understand this concept; these I buy pretty much sight unseen (not quite, I do check out their release schedules for blurbs, but you get the idea). It is these companies that I expect to be around in a couple of years, still producing products of solid quality. As a freelancer, it is these companies that provide for me the best example of the kind of material I need to write if I want to continue writing for this market.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few months.

Oops. Sorry for the double posting. I've been having a heck of a time with the new EN boards (which is why you don't see me here so much anymore... missed me? ;) )

Chris, i got a reply from the distributor that the Core Mutants and Masterminds book can't be ordered anymore. Is it being reprinted or something?

Simply not true. The Mutants and Masterminds book is in stock and selling briskly every month! If you drop me a line privately, I'll see if I can get Osseum to sort things out with your distributor!

As a consumer, I vote with my wallet. I don't have time to waste re-working rules and such. I need the product to be inspired and fully functional.

As a merchant, I push people toward great products (and not just stuff that I have on my shelf). Sometimes, the customer will still get what they came looking for, but many times, they go away with a great book that they thank me for later.

One could say that customers are stupid, but I think that is not the case (and I'm not just being politically correct either). Customers are apathetic and go to the game store to find products that are being sold to other gamers in their town. The store help and customer service is lacking, so there is no guideance there either. I used to be this way before I started my own shop. I would go into the FLGS and wander, WANTING DESPERATELY to spend my money and get something to read that I would enjoy. I got tired of trying to spend my money, preferring to hold on to it versus wasting it on 64 pages of disappointment.

The store owners (or the people that do the ordering) are the stupid ones. They may only stock the bigger names or the bigger product lines because they perceive that they'll have better sales from them versus the smaller (IMHO, higher quality) publishers. The full color glossies and marketing they get through the distributors has much to do with that. The distributors pass out lots of the higher volume crap to spur sales because they have a better margin from those publishers than the smaller ones. This really stacks the supposed ballot box when the options to the consumer are limited.

As for publishers doing the same thing over and over, this is true for some books like the Dwarves example. I've also been screaming for a much better alternative "Oriental Adventures" book for a long time (non-Rokugan primer). While there might be some inspired "re-tread" on some of the same old topics, there are MANY areas that have not been fully explored.

This supposed "d20 market shrink" I think has more to do with stiff competition by smaller, "hungrier" companies digging into the sales of the larger publishers. If anything, my sales have been going up and I'm selling more of the smaller publishers than ever before. Of course, since I prefer smaller publishers and steer my customers that way, that may have something to do with it too. :)

While the numbers are dwindling fast and we'll probably have to reprint this winter, the core rules are still in stock and available from Osseum. I don't know which distributor you've been talking to, but their facts are not straight.
