Publishers: Why'd you name your company what you did?

Ambient Inc. was named after a book by Jack Womack... we are called Ambient because we are everywhere. I still work for Ambient Inc. as a publicist (right now working on the Chris de Burgh tour), but Ambient is no longer in the d20 publishing business (but we still do school yearbooks).

---

E.N. Publishing is named after... well... two words, one starting with E and the other with N. And surprisingly, it's not Mr Noah's name. In fact, if anyone (who isn't directly associated with ENP) can guess what the letters -do- stand for, I'll throw them a pile of free stuff to keep their mouths shut.*

We chose it for the obvious reason of the marketing power behind the EN Brand - since we had to have a new name to handle the change from two independent publishers (Ambient Inc. and Natural 20 Press), we had the advantage of already having been in the market for some time.

* - One guess per person, this is not an official contest, but I will still send you stuff if you guess right on the first try. No purchase necessary. Some names not for use with some games. Your parents put it together.

Malladin's Gate is a carefully constructed name. We did have the name Black Orifice Games (although Nigel prefered 'Productions') when we were intending to publish our own non-D20 game, intended for a mature audience. When we decided to jump on the D20 fantasy band wagon instead we needed something a bit more family-friendly.
The issue was discussed over a phone call where we decided we needed something fantasy-oriented.
I had just been playing Baldur's gate, and so siad "we need something like baldur's gate".
Nigel said, "What about someone else's gate"
At the time we were developing our own fantasy setting for release by this about-to-be-named company (which we now have released in the form of the DarkLore campaign primer). Anyone who is familiar with this setting (which is probably not many of you, given the proliferation of PDF settings, even one as relatively successful as DarkLore) will be aware that Malladin is a significant historical figure from that game world (a wizardly Charlemagne). Hence we used the name Malladin and came up with Malladin's Gate. A few other options were considered before 'press' was settled on finally, but it was my first suggestion, if memory serves.

That's probably the longest explanation as to where the name came from, but there you go.

cheerio,

Ben

Highmoon was the name of my first website way back in 1996, which was supposed to be a virtual recreation of the town of Highmoon, in Deepingdale of the Forgotten Realms. I've used Highmoon as a handle for 9 years, and when I decided to go for it with the publishing thing, I brought the name with me.

The 'Media Productions' was an addendum needed half because someone had already registered highmoon.com, and because with this appelation, I have great flexibility to pursue any kind of project which could fall under the "media" label.

This has been bugging me for a long time, because I remember that when you first announced EN Publishing you said that the name did not stand for Eric Noah. You have been taunting me for a couple years now with this, and I still haven't a clue. In fact, you have said so little about it since that first announcement that I had begun to wonder if I had imagined it.

Now, if someone will only guess correctly so I can sleep at night.

My company owes its name to the events of 9/11.

No, seriously: I was living in NYC at the time, and when I was leaving my previous employers (Synister Creative Systems) in October of 2001 to strike out on my own, I was trying to come up with a name. The philosophy I was going for was that even in the face of such awful things happening, people should still make the effort to engage in recreation, simply because human beings NEED that kind of diversion from time to time. I guess it was part of the whole "don't let them win by making you live in constant fear" thing.

I remember saying to a friend that we should be "adamant" about not letting this get us down permanently. A little bell went off in my head, and there ya go: Adamant Entertainment.
