Pure speed!

Character idea: the personification of quickness.
Background: human barbarian who just doesn't have the muscle to hang with the big boys, so he goes off and becomes a wandering rogue.

STR 8
DEX 18
CON 10
INT 14
WIS 10
CHA 10
(Based on a 28 pt buy)

The idea of starting him off as a barbarian is so that he can have that fast movement! Actually, I would start him as a rogue/barbarian using the apprentice class system. That way I could still get the 8x4 skill points that a rogue gets at first lev.

What I'd like input on is the feats.
I think I want to take Weapon Finesse (dagger) at 3rd level. I'd eventually like to have expertise, and the dodge/mobility/Spring Attack string of feats. And of course, improved initiative. But which ones should I take first?

Run
Dash (Song & Silence)
Fleet of Foot (Song & Silence)

Those are all of the running & speed type feats in the core and splatbooks. From the tone of your description, the character idea just sounded like an excuse to do the whole rogue spring attack thing again. While the whole speed thing is cool for a character idea, how do you plan to use it? How does the speed come into play. Maybe that would help pick the types of feats you are really looking for.

I don't understand. Is it bad, in your view, to make a character description based on a strategic idea? It sounds like you disapprove for some reason, although then you go on to suggest that I focus less on the character idea and more on what I plan to actually do. This leaves me confused about what you intended to express.

But I appreciate your warning about the danger of ending up with a character who rarely gets to use his best abilities.

And by the way, you are right that the idea of springing in and out of melee really was an image that appealed to me. Although the original idea that inspired this was that it might be cool to have a dagger specialist (rather than using the biggest weapons available). And then the larger idea of making quickness the key came from that.

By the way, thanks for reminding me about the running-related feats.

Would a monk be better for you in the long run?

Yeah, I considered that, but a monk has to have more strength, while a rogue can do damage without much strength. And the whole idea of being lawful and disciplined, and meditating .... wasn't for me.

So, I guess you cought me. It's not really pure speed above all else that i wanted.

Isn't there a psionic feat that increases your movement by 10? What about making a Barbarian, then taking enough levels in Psion to have 29 power points, and then switching alignment to lawful and going Monk?

It just seemed that the basic idea/description/background (a character based on speed) was not really connected to the combat idea. Since you supplied a bit more data, it does make make a little more sense.

I have played with players who think of the feat chains first, then come up with a background to support it. Then there are those that come up with a background first, then flesh out the idea. The two are NOT equal in my book.
