One of the best things about it was nobody told him the choir would be performing that piece. He was flabberstunnded! (As I recall, his family was present as well.)

The PortaPros are the headphones I use at work. They are not handsome headphones, but as far as I can find, they give the best sound reproduction around for the money. Given that they are often found going for about $35, they may be the best sound reproduction around for twice their money. The design hasn't changed since the 1980s because it simply works.

They are open, so you can still hear what's around you, and if you crank the music it will be heard. And they don't do noise cancellation. But they're cheap and light and they've got really surprisingly good bass response.

Being able to hear if someone wants my attention would probably be an advantage in this situation.

I almost posted the MTC version, but their take is much more...well...everything! Ours was more stripped down. Almost purely choir.
