Qs about The Quintessential Fighter.

I do have one thing to say in detraction of the book:

The feats for gold exchange is suspect in a game where a character might get some money early on.

In my own prefvious game where my players got less than a 100 gold during the length of the campaign it would balance. But that's a rare game and those low rewards were not even what I expected nor planned before I began it. It just happened that way.

In most games the player after his first adventure has enough cash to make up for any short fall in starting gold.

Other than that one issue I find the book to be one of the best I've purchased for d20.

I've definately got Mongoose on my purchase list. But of of course I'm only as loyal as the next product. :D Like any smart customer you have to buy my loyalty with quality one product at a time. But so far that's carried me through the entire Mongoose product line.

Seperate Wizards and Sorcerers books, however, ah, have we got something planned there. . . :)

Oh I hope so...

I'm sick of everybody lumping these two together so much. Of course they are very similar. Which is the heart of the problem. They need more to distinguish them. I hear too many people in games who think there's only need for one of the two to exist... Which is not an entirely unvalid position. I'm just saying I see a need for more to invalidate that position. :D

About my email, I'm sorry for coming across poorly, but when I posted, I had just come over from reading the thread where everyone was debating sexual art in gaming products. But aside from that, I still am not particularly interested in the product. Then again, I'm more of a wizard and sorcerer person myself, not so much a fighter.

My apologies if I came off a little impolitely.

There's a difference between news and reviews; and more to the point, all anyone asked was that the reviewers mention up front that they were a playtester on the product.

I think that's a reasonable standard.

Nobody is taking Mongoose to task at all.

Oh man! I just get back from vacation and see a swarm of flame bees here on the board. I apologize if I upset anyone in my posting and to not responding sooner as I was away on a business vacation. I was not offering, nor have I ever offered, any type of reviews for the numerous companies I or any of my players have playtested. We do not get paid for any of the companies we provide this service too (including WoTC) as we do it out of love for the game and to bring RPG products up to best standards that we personally hold to. All I was doing was posting my honest opionions, which are just that, my opinions. Having been in the RPG world since 82 I have seen the good and bad, and have also seen this in the d20 system (yeah, I was one of those people who bought the nightshift products) products as well. To this day I still buy everything WOTC makes. I was one of those dire hard fans who was upset at all the errata on the player's handbook and such after we were told it was in development for years, etc. Lately, the material Moongoose has been putting out I feel, is great stuff, it brings back the awe and the oooos from my group everytime they buy and read one. Which is what I like to see in my player's reaction, books that capture and make their imagination juices flow, and make them all want to use one or more things from said book in their characters.

I apologize again if my post distrubed anyone and that I did not mention outright I was a playtester (other than I did say they listened to us in my post, which I assume everyone understood my meaning of the comment). I did so as I did not think it would change my opinion about a product, nor was I offering any reviews or telling anyone to go out and buy one, and quite frankly, the thought had not even occured to me do to so (I was posting while at work and doing a multiple of other things too boot, we all been there). In future posts (as I post much to the boards since Eric started them many a moon ago), I will state if I am a playtester of a given product if I make any personal opinions about it.

Comments? Flames? Let's take them off topic (urklore@mediaone.net) and continue on with the dice rolling and the kicking of Orcish asp.

Damage bonus in the OMCS. Umm, p101, under Recording Damage. They are no longer 80 strong, they are 10 strong. Of course there is no other bonus. . . I have to admit, I may be off base here with what you are trying to get at. . .

Actually now that I have looked at it, It is clear you don't understand what I am getting at. Yes, I understand the damage modifier; that seems to be pretty central to scaling in OMCS. However, when units do damage, they do unit hit points, not members. Though there should be a correspondance where damage is concerned, none is mentioned, and you cannot assume that 1 person = 1 unit hit dice, as unit hit dice is modified by the HD of each member and other factor. The only effect tht is mentioned in the text of taking unit hit points is "being wiped out or defeated."

In short, there needs to be a convenient method for tracking damage back to unit size. I would recommend diving both unit size and unit hit points by ten, and saying for every X unit HP it loses Y unit size.

Urklore: you have all of zero to apologize for. This board is full of and has always been full of people pandering and promoting products they were being paid to participate in. Just look at some of the 'favorite this or that' threads.

You weren't even getting paid.

As for the comment about it having been news. I've been here a long time and as long as I've been here that news has always had a bit of a subjective opinion to it..

I dunno, I think if you have any sort of relationship with the company, you are obligated to mention it in a review.

Personally, from what I've seen of the Mongoose books, they must be paying the reviewers or something. Really really lousy...90% filler, the rest are lousy rules.

The artwork is nice.

Amazing Agility - I have to say, you are the only gentleman that has brought this up. Anybody else share this view? Tell me now, and I'll make sure we won't do it again

FWIW I share Psions views here. It certainly sounds as if the "take 20" mechanic is being misunderstood/misused and bears reviewing.

Cheers
