Ques: Correct Way to Drink a Potion?

Aluvial

In game terms, how is a potion drunk?

Does it provoke an AoO at any point -- when drawn, when drunk?

What type of actions are required for this?

Is it a move to find and a move to drink? Can you make a 5' step?

Drinking a potion or applying an oil requires no special skill. The user merely removes the stopper and swallows the potion or
smears on the oil. The following rules govern potion and oil use:
• Drinking a potion or applying an oil is a standard action. The potion or oil takes effect immediately.
• Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity. A successful attack (including grappling attacks) against the
character forces a Concentration check (as with casting a spell). If the character fails this check, she cannot drink the
potion. An attacker may direct the attack of opportunity against the potion or oil container rather than against the
character. A successful attack on the potion can destroy the container.
• A creature must be able to swallow a potion or smear on an oil. Because of this, incorporeal creatures cannot use
potions or oils.
• Any corporeal creature can imbibe a potion. The potion must be swallowed. Any corporeal creature can use an oil.
• A character can carefully administer a potion to an unconscious creature as a full-round action, trickling the liquid
down the creature’s throat. Likewise, it takes a full-round action to apply an oil to an unconscious creature.
Hope that helps...

Thanks. Here are a few follow up questions.

How long does it take to find and draw a potion?

How long does it take to find a potion on another character?

Retrieving a stored item is a Move-Equivalent Action. PH, page 128.

It depends. Retrieving an item from a bag of holding that currently holds no more than a normal backpack could hold is a move-equivalent action. If the bag of holding holds more than that, it's a full-round action. I suppose you could extend this to other larger-than-backpack containers as well, such as a large crate, though a Search check might be appropriate too.

Oh, and there's Pick Pocket too.

A potion belt allows you to retrieve a potion as a free action. They hold up to 6 potions, or 10 if you get the masterwork belt.

Could you name the source of where you found this "potion belt?"

I can't seem to find it anywhere and am concerned about HOW it allows potions to be retrieved as Free Actions.

Thanks,

it's in the FRCS

potion belt: This sturdy leather belt similar to a bandoleer has pockets shaped to hold potions vials and is fitted with ties or flaps to keep the potions from falling out. It hold six potions. Retrieving a potion from a potion belt is a free action once per round.

potion belt, masterwork: 'extremely well-made potion belt...holds ten potions'

costs 1 gp, and 60 gps both weigh 1 pound

I can't remember the supplement - probably FRCS or T&B. It works on the principle that it places the potions in the perfect location for quick retrieval. Remember, that the actual use of the potion is still a standard action - it just means the character can find the potion as a free action.

scroll organizer: this long strip of leather had an overlapping series of fifteen pockets sewn along one side, each large enough to hold a scroll of a single spell. When slipped into a pocket, only the top of the scroll shows, allowing you to scan the scrolls' titles
