question about how Protection from Arrows works

I understand that the 2nd level spell Protection from Arrows gives you DR10/magic against projectiles. Does this protect you if someone is shooting at you with a +1 bow using regular wooden arrows, or do the arrows themselves need to be magic? Is this spel pretty worthless if you know your opponent is using a magic bow?

Yes. Magicly enhanced bows bestow that magic status onto the ammo they fire. This protects you from the 1st level shlub archer hoards that will be firing on you.

Much like DR magic does not matter than much on a higher CR monster, this matters far less when facing foes of your own caliber. And it will suck once those higher level NPC casters distribute those 50 greater magic weapon'ed arrows amoung the troops.

Yeah... 'cept is still doesn't make you immune to say, a bunch of cloud giants that you were taunting because you mistakenly thought the spell actually stopped the missiles.

but I'm not bitter

Protection from Arrows
Abjuration
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature touched
Duration: 1 hour/level or until discharged
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless)

The warded creature gains resistance to ranged weapons. The subject gains damage reduction 10/magic against ranged weapons. (This spell doesn’t grant you the ability to damage creatures with similar damage reduction.) Once the spell has prevented a total of 10 points of damage per caster level (maximum 100 points), it is discharged.

Focus
A piece of shell from a tortoise or a turtle.

Prot from arrows is one of those spells that can be pretty useful once in a while. For example, if your planning to face a guy whose a powerful archer it can be a great spell. It lasts a long time, and one dispel magic on the guy's bow and you become practically immune to him.

Dispel Magic followed by Shatter, or Dispel Magic followed by greataxe, are fun as well.

Would that work? Even though the dispel supresses the magic in the item, isn't it still a magic item, and thus cannot be affected by Shatter?

The relevant text from dispel magic: "A suppressed item becomes nonmagical for the duration of the effect. ... A magic item’s physical properties are unchanged: A suppressed magic sword is still a sword (a masterwork sword, in fact)." It does not explicitly say it's not a "magic item", but there's strong evidence to support that. Is a magic item nonmagical? ;)
