Question about PrC requirements.

Lets say I have a Dwarf Fighter 5 that has the following feats: Power Attack, Cleave, Great Cleave, Weapon Focus(Dwarven Waraxe), and Weapon Specialization(Dwarven Waraxe). Upon attaining the sixth level could he select the feat Mounted Combat (assuming he also has a point in Ride) and take the level in Knight Protector (CW)?

This can be summarized by asking what order do you gain things in when you level up? Thanks.

The answer would be NO as the first thing you do upon leveling up is select your class. The breakdown order for gaining a level is listed near the end of the class chapter in the PHB with class selection being first and feat selection being close to last (might be last, I don't have a PHB 3.5 handy at the moment)

That is so. You have to meet all requirements *before* you level up, not at some point during the process. So, you'll have to wait until 7th level, before starting to multiclass with the PrC.

Thank you both for the clarification. While that may be the rule doesnt it seem a little off? Ive always envisioned practicing my feat for a while culminating with a level increase where all of the practice 'clicks into place'. Alas, I will just rework my character.

Nah, it's not off. That's the basic training you need to have done before starting with the advanced training. :)

Also, think of it this way: How much will that rank in Ride cost you? It's presumably a class skill for the PrC you want, but if you took a level in, say, wizard it wouldn't be. So you have to know what class you're taking before you spend your skill points.

Same with feats. Taking a level in fighter or wizard might get you a bonus feat, so you have to know what class you're taking before selecting feats.

Class comes first, unfortunately. :)

If you want to go this way there are optional rules for training in the DMG (pg 197+)
