If you get the same skill from two different sources, does the skill gain an expertise die?

For example, say you get the History skill from a culture, and then you choose the Noble background (which grants History as a skill). Do you now roll History skill checks with a 1d4 expertise die?

Technically no. I don't think that would be a terrible house rule though. I haven't tried it!

The PHB avoids this by allowing freedom to substitute skills in the background. That's a better solution, IMO.

Expertise is already (and increasingly) too diluted, and it diminishes what makes Rogues great.

If your character would gain the same proficiency from multiple areas, such as a heritage or cultural trait or class feature, they may instead choose a new proficiency of the same type (skill or tool).

Agreed though that could be a fun house rule.
