Do they lead into each other or does one have to create the lead between them? Or neither?

Murder in Baldur's Gate and Legacy of the Crystal Shard are stand-alone, although I adjusted Legacy so the same characters went through both.

Scourge of the Sword Coast directly leads into Dead in Thay.

Cheers!

Just to add to this a little bit, Legacy of the Crystal Shard says that PCs might have played Murder in Baldur's Gate. It then gives you a couple of hooks that might work well to bring the PCs from to Icewind Dale. There are only a couple of small issues with connecting them that I see. Murder in Baldur's Gate really entrenches the PCs as figures within Baldur's Gate and they might not want to leave because of a simple plot hook. Also, both adventures are made for PCs level 1-3. Since Murder is so open ended, it's certainly possible for the PCs to be level 3 or even 4 when they complete it making Legacy a little too easy. Though, Murder has very few mandatory combats and if you only give out XP due to combat, it's possible for the PCs to still be level 1 at the end.

Just something to keep in mind.

Now that I've seen all 4 for a future campaign I would do:

Start with Legacy of the Crystal shard which takes them to 3rd.
Then do Scourge of the Sword Coast as they follow the coastal road past Waterdeep.
They finish at 5th.
The continue south as the locals prepare for Dead in Thay and do a 'right-sized' Murder in Baldur's Gate where the leaders are competent NPCs and the party feels like they should be saving the town.

Then head back up to Daggerford as the area is prepared for the assault. Do Dead in Thay starting at 6th or 7th.

Interesting.

My plan is to do a mash-up of Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle, Scourge of the Sword Coast, and Dead in Thay as a 4E Heroic tier mini-campaign and otherwise as a sandbox-like game set on the wonderful regional map by Mike Schley.

If I end up running Legacy of the Crystal Shard, I think I will just do it as its own mini-campaign as well. Unfortunately, I really don't like Murder in Baldur's Gate so I have no plans to use that at all. Ever. Nuh uh. However, I do like your idea of running it at a higher and, therefore, more appropriate level. I still struggle with the design decision that describes the horribly-named Abdel Adrian as so strong and powerful... and he's just a level 3 fighter.
