Question on fantasy races

I just encounter people talking about furries as if they're a bad thing. I wanted to know from one of them why.

There's an implied sexual association with furries in general - especially to people who have ventured into the dark recesses of the internet. You can sometimes get away with a "furry" race if you describe them exclusively as brutal/savage. Using any associations of beauty or grace with them is a no-no.

As for the rest of the topic...

I am a big fan of the idea of rolling races without obviously inhuman mechanical effects into the human race. Don't even separate them out by geographical location or anything... they are all just humans, but with slightly different mechanics.

Other races should only exist if they have a sufficiently alien morality that they wouldn't fit as humans.

This should allow your players variety without having to support 35 different cultures. If one of your players wants to play as a separate race and has a good idea for a background for that race, you should try to accommodate them.

I just think it's silly to end up with minotaur fighters just for the stat bonuses. Just be a strong human with a penchant for charging!

You find the same stuff about anything if you venture into the dark recesses of the internet. I don't see why furries should have to be singled out. (But I'm not accusing you of advocating against them, I feel you are just answering my question.)

Flavor-wise or just mechanically?

Flavor-wise or just mechanically?

More specifically, I don't think that flavor should be forced by a player's mechanical preferences. If I want to play as a human fighter, but I feel that a dwarf has superior mechanical benefits for my build, I'd rather just reskin my dwarf as a human. There are a few instances in which I'm not sure it's feasible to do so - 4e Dragonborn for one. You'd have to have a pretty compelling reason to have a firebreathing human.

Agree. There is a saying that if there is a special interest, in anything at all, there is an internet community that has it as a fetish. Internet is, after all, where special interest groups can find each other. I guess furries just were one of the first communities to organize.

This is why I also tend to avoid races of giant feet.
